In June 2021, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division reopened the investigation into the 2015 death of Stephen Smith.
Stephen’s story has touched the hearts of many people across the United States in recent months. About a week ago, a member reading a certain Facebook page decided to visit Stephen’s gravesite. The person was saddened to discover that he did not have a formal headstone. That post is what prompted our idea to host a fundraiser to help cover expenses on behalf of Stephen’s mother, Ms. Sandy Smith.
Our goal is to raise money for Ms. Sandy’s legal expenses, a scholarship fund in Stephen’s name and anything else that we can do to help and give back to this mother, who has been waiting for more than 6 long years for answers to her son’s death.
On October 30, 2021, The Capital Club will host the #StandingForStephen Fundraiser, featuring a Silent Auction, for Stephen Smith’s family. Our guest of honor will be Stephen’s mother, Ms. Sandy.
The Capital Club is the longest, continuous operating gay bar in the Southeast, and the oldest in Columbia, S.C. For more than 40 years, The Capital Club has helped the LGBT community. We feel that it is now our turn to help with Stephen Smith’s cause and to bring the light to the darkness of his story
