My sister Mary, her husband Steve and their son Garrett have been through a lot this year. On February 26th, Steve passed out and was hospitalized at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis. Since then there has been uncertainty around Steve’s health.
He was transferred to St. Vincent’s Heart Center in Indianapolis on February 28 following numerous tests and procedures. It was there that they believed a virus had attacked Steve’s heart and it was operating at only 20%. Following more tests, procedures, and Steve’s heart stopping several times, an emergency procedure occurred on March 6 and an LVAD was implanted. (If you would like to read more about this temporary solution, you can go to: ( www.mylvad.com ) This device was inserted into Steve’s heart and it ensures that his heart has the capacity to pump blood until the time at which he could receive a new heart. As of July 13, Steve is officially on the transplant list and we pray that he gets a new heart soon.
They have been so strong throughout this process but as you can imagine it has been a tremendous struggle physically, mentally, and financially. Steve came home on March 30th. Since then he completed his cardiac rehab, but not leading the life that that he had prior to his illness. He has been unable to work and that has put a financial strain on this amazing loving family. If you know Mary and Steve, you would know they are a fun, loving, compassionate and supportive couple. They would not hesitate to help any of their friends and family in a crisis.
As we continue to wait for news of a new heart for Steve, many of you have reached out to ask how you can help. I felt like this page would be a great way for those of you who would like to help can.
