Standing with Saint Martin

My name is Charlie Bellahsen, I grew up on the island of Saint Martin, where my family has been living for the past 20 years. I am deeply concerned and I feel powerless, because I live in NYC, while my family, my friends, my home faced, on the 5th of September 2017, the strongest hurricane ever seen in the Atlantic.
Hurricane Irma has devastated the island of Saint Martin/St Marteen. Now more than ever, we need to offer our support and help inhabitants rebuild their homes, feed their families and renew their lives. Many neighborhoods are completely under water and seriously damaged. Many people lost their roofs, some their entire homes. There is extensive damage to the airport, hospital and other essential infrastructure.
Militaries and gendarms have finally arrived on the island where violence is rising. People are scared and confused, and don't always receive the right information.
But let's not forget that the island holds true to its name "The Friendly Island" : I have received many testimonies about amazing solidarity within the communities.
Packages of food, water and bare necessities are being prepared in Guadeloupe, the nearby island ( 45 Minutes by plane ) and they need help. We are being updated everyday about associations who work very hard. They need help to be able to provide as many people as possible.
Donations are essential right now so the relief of packages could keep going in the weeks to come. The inhabitants need to get back on their feet, they have lost so much. Food, water and medications are now a priority.
Islands of the Caribbean are suffering climate change and it is our moment to show solidarity.
This is my home, and this is my way to contribute to the rebuilding of this beautiful island. Saint Martiners are strong and I have faith in reconstruction. This is where our hearts stand, as young Caribbean people, far from home.
