"Letter from Paul & Rendi Maxie"

I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for you even taking the time to read this and consider making a contribution to this life-changing cause in mine and Paul's lives. It is no easy task to be transparent about the obstacles we are facing as I'm a private person who would rather just bottle up my emotions and seek God for deliverance. I do believe however that God gave us each other as a source of encouragement and support, healing also comes from transparency. I know many will not understand all that I share as there's a lot I fully don't understand myself. We'll let Holy Spirit take the reigns there.

Paul and I have known each other our entire lives as we grew up together going to school and dating off and on throughout. He is truly the love of my life. Throughout our school years, Paul was very active in various sports and with that came injuries that were commonly doctored with prescription pain pills. Although he had started experimenting with various drugs at the early age of 13 and later became engulfed in dealing them himself, he never became fully addicted to any except pain pills.

As with many people, hardships in life can cause one to numb the pain felt- physically and emotionally. Paul began to numb emotional pain felt from physical ailment in his childhood with legg-calve perthes which caused him to wear braces, along with molestation, and diagnosis of type 1 insulin dependent diabetes and witnessing the physical hardships his dad endured. These pills although left a void and caused numerous other obstacles, they allowed him to numb and prevent him from facing these underlying pains.

Throughout the years, Paul has been able to have short, inconsistent periods of sobriety but the addiction eventually only consumed him to the extent of regularly taking over 40 Vicodin a day and me becoming aware of it three years into our marriage. From there, it spiraled out of control causing our God ordained marriage so much pain. Lack of understanding and control can cause things like hurt, bitterness and anger to take root rather than the trust God is trying to instill in us. Paul has always possessed a beautiful servant's heart but never slowed down to focus on what God's best for him looked like. Praise God for His unconditional love and Grace in continuing to give Paul life with him taking a fatal amount of this poison daily!

Paul and I have received God's promises time and time again about what our Kingdom marriage looks like and the work He has for us to do on the other side of this addiction- to help others gain freedom from this painful, life controlling addiction. To speak life over their hopeless looking situation and to remind them of God's Word and promises for their life. Us knowing this and not being able to fully walk in freedom has resulted in a very dark, painful season of hopelessness and realization that the time for change is now. Praise God for a time of despair, in that Paul courageously reached out for help. We began to counsel with our wonderful Pastors and seek God's provision concerning Paul's sobriety. Through this whole hearted cry of surrender, we have received confirmation and God has orchestrated our plan of action. Paul has been accepted into an amazing 9 month program at Arise Addiction Recovery in Maine. (www.ariseaddictionrecovery.com)

The program will not only focus on freedom from this life controlling addiction but Paul will learn structure, discipline and hard work while studying God's Word and applying it to his life. Their goal is not only to help Paul find freedom from addiction, but to help reestablish him in the community as an effective husband, family member, friend and servant of Christ.

This June will be 9 years of marriage and the start of a new season- a season of walking in sobriety, God's identity for us, trusting in Him, stepping out in His best for us, His will for our lives and becoming who He created us to be for the advancement of His Kingdom. We are excited, nervous and passionate about what this time of transition will hold. We are grateful for the support from Pastors Adam and Cassandra Sesin along with Pastors Tom and Charlotte McDaniels who have stood behind us and encouraged us to partake in this life changing program.

We pray that you will consider contributing financially and/or through prayer.

The itemized list of expenses will include:

$700 round trip plane tickets
$270 week at detoxification center
$4,000 Arise addiction recovery center

Total cost of $4,970

We graciously receive your support and encouragement as this season is one of transition for us.
