Maurice Axel Cruz Morales "Mo", a dedicated member of our dojo, a successful competitor, and a true friend, suffered a life-altering injury doing what he loves.

<div>Matching his competitive spirit in judo, Maurice is also an incredible scholar. While pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science at CSU San Bernardino, Maurice served as president of the Kinesiology Student Association.

<div>He worked closely with kinesiology professors, Amanda Rymal, Nicole Dabbs, and Zhaojing Chen on research investigating the health and performance effects of exercise training. His work was presented at regional and national conferences and won a prestigious 2025 National Undergraduate Scholar Award from the American Kinesiology Association.

<div>Beyond his achievements, Maurice’s leadership, humility, and commitment to helping others have left a lasting mark on the judo and kinesiology community. Today, that same community has an opportunity to come together in support of someone who has given so much to others.

<div> Last weekend, while competing at the USA Judo Senior Nationals in Albuquerque, Maurice sustained a severe spinal injury during a match. He was immediately transported to a local trauma center where he underwent emergency surgery.
</div>

<div><strong>Current Status</strong>
</div>
<div>The road ahead for Maurice is long. Currently, he has regained movement in his arms, but he is facing paralysis in his legs. While Maurice is a fighter with an incredible spirit, the reality of his recovery involves immense physical, emotional, and financial challenges.
