Standing with Hannah Through Her Medical Challenges

My name is Hannah Brumbaugh, I am 19 years old. The life I expected after graduating high school has been far from normal. The past year and a half has had a lot of medical challenges for me. It started with being diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. The severe curvature of my spine required surgery through Shriners. I had rods and screws placed in September 2024. Then came the excessive surrealism, deja vu feelings daily. I just wanted to end it all, not feeling real or connected to the world. Even though I had a note written, I did not go through with it. A week of inpatient hospitalization, which occurred over Christmas 2024, was difficult but some med changes allowed me to continue on. Then, other changes began, referred to endocrinologist and GI. Nothing seemed too out of the ordinary, so I was dismissed. I worked 40, sometimes 40+ hours a week, but hot flashes with skin melting sensation were becoming increasingly challenging. My PCP and psych told me everything was normal, said it was just anxiety, and upped my meds. At this point, I had changed jobs wanting a more consistent schedule but after a few months, my life took a turn. I could not work or function. I tried daily but episode after episode after episode occurred. I felt like I was passing out (unconscious once), I was noted to be twitching, unable to hold my head up, bilateral eye movement, drooping left eye (ptosis), sweating, vomiting daily, etc. I was sent to the ER twice from work, ultimately quitting due to the severity of my symptoms, without any medical diagnosis. I lost a significant and unhealthy amount of weight. At this time, I required numerous specialist appointments in attempts to find the answers. I saw cardiology, hematology, ENT, and neurology. It was discovered that I have a mass on my right arm, an osteochondroma, which is usually benign, but due to the fact it has grown in size and is painful needs to be surgically removed. That was back in September and to date, not cleared for surgery. Another issue identified is tinnitus (ringing in my ears) with moderate chronic hearing loss in both of my ears, which requires another surgery (again not yet cleared for). From August to December tests performed: blood work, imaging/scans, lumbar puncture, heart monitor, echocardiogram, and tilt table testing. Recently, diagnosed with POTS, which can be managed with lifestyle changes (attempting) and potentially meds. But due to the other symptoms being similar to absence or temporal lobe seizures: the surrealism, daily deja vu, etc. an ambulatory EEG has been ordered by Penn Med. I would have to wait two months for this, but instead my family is running me back and forth to Philadelphia to get it performed within the next 3 weeks. After the ambulatory EEG, I am looking at potentially being admitted to EMU (epilepsy medical unit) in Philadelphia, for up to 7 days. Due to the seizure-like activity and becoming unconscious once, my driver’s license is gone until approximately April 2026. My mother has been required to miss work to take me to appointments consistently over the past year. I also am not able to make my car payment, so my mother is to ensure I do not lose my car. Money has become very tight for us with the daily financial strains as well as very expensive medical bills. I am asking for help, any kind of assistance possible from our beloved friends, family, and community. Please know this doesn't come easily for me or my family. I am a dedicated and hardworking individual. I am also a certified exterior firefighter. Though I can no longer be an active firefighter, I remain a member with Station 90. Quite honestly any time with my friends and family is nonexistent right now. Even any attempts made to take a walk outside or window shop to just get out of the house, result in me needing to utilize a borrowed wheelchair due to episodes. Please be praying for me, for further answers, and for me to be able to function in life again. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
