<div>On December 12th, our family’s world changed when my great-grandmother, Edna, suffered a devastating fall that left her needing emergency hip surgery. What we hoped would be the start of her recovery quickly turned into another battle. While healing, she developed a severe ulcer on her back that became infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a dangerous and aggressive bacteria that requires intensive antibiotic treatment for weeks—and most likely months—to save her life.

<div>My great grandma lives in Honduras, where the public hospital in our city is currently overwhelmed and unable to accept new patients. Despite her critical condition and urgent need for care, there was simply no room for her. With no other choice and time working against us, our family was forced to admit her to a private hospital so she could receive the life-saving treatment she desperately needed.

<div>The cost has been overwhelming. We are being charged approximately $1,000 per week, and this does not include the many additional expenses that come with prolonged hospitalization, medications, procedures, and ongoing care. As much as we are doing everything we can, the financial burden has become too heavy for our family to carry alone.

<div>El 12 de diciembre, la vida de nuestra familia cambió por completo cuando mi bisabuela, Edna, sufrió una fuerte caída que la obligó a someterse a una cirugía de emergencia en la cadera. Lo que creímos que sería el inicio de su recuperación pronto se convirtió en otra lucha. Durante su proceso de sanación, desarrolló una úlcera severa en la espalda que se infectó con la bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, una infección agresiva y peligrosa que requiere un tratamiento intensivo con antibióticos durante semanas y muy probablemente meses para poder salvar su vida.

<div>Mi bisabuela vive en Honduras, donde el hospital público de nuestra ciudad se encuentra actualmente saturado y sin capacidad para recibir nuevos pacientes. A pesar de la gravedad de su condición y de la urgencia médica, no había espacio para atenderla. Sin otra alternativa y con el tiempo en contra, nuestra familia se vio obligada a internarla en un hospital privado para que pudiera recibir los procedimientos médicos que necesitaba con urgencia para sobrevivir.

<div>Los costos han sido abrumadores. Actualmente se nos está cobrando aproximadamente $1,000 dólares por semana, una cantidad que ni siquiera cubre todos los gastos adicionales que conlleva una hospitalización prolongada, como medicamentos, procedimientos médicos y cuidados constantes. Aunque estamos haciendo todo lo posible, la carga económica se ha vuelto imposible de sostener solos.
