<div>Several weeks ago, Michelle took action to shield her family from a dangerous situation involving a police department K9 that had not yet been certified.

<div>Despite several conversations with her superiors for help after the dog displayed several unprovoked and unpredictable acts of aggression, including attacking her own child more than once in her own home. The administration failed to relieve Michelle of the responsibility of the k9s care immediately and instead resolved to have the k9 euthanized at a later date.

<div>Before the opportunity for euthanasia arrived, the k9 attacked another service dog that Michelle was watching for the week (she is the first person so many other handlers call when they need a trustworthy sitter) and she was forced to intervene. In a desperate attempt to protect herself and her family, Michelle made the heartbreaking decision to end the dog’s life. She immediately reported the incident to her superiors and gave a full written statement—honest, transparent, and detailed.

<div>For over six weeks, Michelle received no indication that anything was amiss. She had followed protocol. She had done what any mother, dog handler, and officer would do under such traumatic circumstances. Then, on July 30, without warning, Michelle was called into her department and informed that the incident had reached the media. Rather than stand by her or speak the truth, the department placed her on administrative leave and launched an internal investigation. Later that same evening, Michelle learned the case had been referred to the Indiana State Police for a criminal investigation.

<div>Michelle did nothing wrong. She did not hide the truth. She did not act recklessly. She acted as a mother and officer trying to do the right thing in an impossible situation—after weeks of pleading for

<div>betrayal of a department she has loyally served. All while trying to care for her children, pick up the pieces of her life, and prepare for what could be a long and costly legal battle.

<div>Those of us who know Michelle know her heart. I worked with her for over a decade in K9 training and law enforcement. Her dogs are not just partners—they are family. They are spoiled, loved, and cherished. Michelle is not only a skilled officer but a compassionate and fiercely loyal human being. What happened was a tragedy—but it was also the result of poor leadership and a failure to act on the part of her superiors. Now, she is being used as a scapegoat for their inaction.
