Mom doesn’t really talk a bout her health, but we need lots of prayers.
Mom had neck surgery last September that went really good. They stabilized as much as they could. So, in February she decided to go ahead and have her lower back surgery because her spine was collapsing again. She had surgery March 6th. We thought everything went great. She was walking and getting around pretty good, until she wasn’t.
Warren called us to come over saying something is wrong with Mom. David, Jess and I went right over and called an ambulance. Mom had an infection in her spine that went up her spine and to her brain.. Mom didn’t know who any of us were. Bubba had to hold her hands for 8 hours because she was combative and kept trying to rip her IV’s out. We got ahold of her surgeon and he had her transferred to Tahlequah. He went back in and cleaned the infection out and had to 4 more times. He took out her hardware and for 2 straight weeks she had Charlie horses that would shake her whole body. Wake her up out of a dead sleep. It was horrible to watch. No one should have to live this way.
They finally went back in and put hardware to stabilize the spine. For 2 weeks her back would pop and grind. You could hear it across the room.
Then they sent her to rehab. What I haven’t told ya'll yet is she is now a paraplegic. She lost the feeling from her knees down. She is devastated. We don’t know if she’ll ever get feeling back. After 2 days in rehab she had to be sent back to the hospital because she had a huge abscess on her spine. It was infected again.
She was sent to Tulsa. We found out she had to have another surgery, her 6th one in a matter of weeks. They went in and cleaned it out again, but all the new screws and hardware is infected again and the bone infection is still there. They left her back cut open to use a wound vac to draw out the infections. She has 3 different infections.
Next Friday they will go back in and remove all the screws and hardware and fuse her from the front. They are hoping this works to remove all the infected hardware. They are also considering a colostomy. If this works they will go back in and rebuild her spine when the infections are gone.
Mom has been there for going over 2 months. Us kids are going to visit as much as we can, but it’s getting expensive to travel to Tulsa and taking off work. Warren has not left my Mom’s side since day one. It is expensive to have to eat out daily. But, he will not leave her.
The worst part of it all Is my Mom doesn’t remember a month of her life. She didn’t know who Bubba, Jess, Warren and I were during that time. Nor her grandkids. She was talking to her Mom and her Uncle Jack. We’ve almost lost her so many times. She is better now, but still has a long way to go. We’d love to visit her a lot more, and take some of the financial burden off of the family. If you can’t donate please know we understand. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
Anyone who knows my Mom knows she’s a fighter, but this has been a long fight with 6 surgeries in such a short amount of time. The loss of her feet has been the most devastating for her. Please please keep her and us in your prayers as we try to figure this all out. We have to remodel the house for a wheelchair and build a ramp. All of this cost money, so any help you can give is appreciated more than you’ll ever know. Thank you.
