This is the heartbreaking reality for Cathy Blackburn, a resilient 73-year-old woman who has endured 40 long years of emotional, physical, and financial abuse at the hands of her controlling husband. For four decades, Cathy has been trapped in a cycle of neglect and cruelty, her dreams shattered, her spirit tested, but her will to survive unbroken. Today, she stands on the brink of freedom—but she needs your help to cross that threshold.

<div>Cathy’s story begins like so many others: a young woman full of hope, building a life with the man she loved. But over the years, that love twisted into something dark and destructive. Her husband wielded control like a weapon, isolating her from friends and family, belittling her dreams, and subjecting her to relentless emotional torment. The physical abuse left invisible scars that deepened with every outburst, every threat. He was reckless with their future, squandering every penny they had—draining their pension, emptying their 401k—on one failed business venture after another. His infidelity compounded the pain, as he poured their hard-earned savings into affairs, even falling victim to a cruel scam by a fraudulent woman from Ghana who preyed on his weaknesses. Allegations of fraud swirl around him now, but the damage is done: their life savings vanished, leaving Cathy to bear the burden alone.

<div>Then came the accident that changed everything. A devastating car wreck fused all of Cathy’s cervical vertebrae, robbing her of mobility and plunging her into a world of chronic pain. The crash also inflicted a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and severe nerve damage, stealing the use of her right arm and hand almost entirely. Her left hand fares only slightly better—she can move just two fingers, a cruel reminder of the independence she once cherished. Unable to work, Cathy now relies solely on her modest Social Security income to cover the impossible: two mortgages on their home, bills that pile up like unspoken accusations of a life stolen from her.

<div>In a moment of desperate courage, Cathy finally sought protection. Just recently, her husband was served with a restraining order after yet another violent episode, a stark acknowledgment of the danger she’s lived with for so long. This is her chance to escape—to file for divorce and reclaim the peace she deserves in her twilight years. But freedom comes at a cost she can’t afford. Attorneys’ fees for a contested divorce, especially one entangled in years of financial mismanagement and abuse, are beyond her reach. Without legal help, Cathy remains tethered to her abuser, her future hanging by a thread.
