<div>My story will be remembered by future generations of Venezuelans and citizens across the Americas. I am the mother of three sons—Oscar, Edgar, and Luis—and I have endured unimaginable loss and suffering. My son Oscar was pursued and brutally murdered by the Nicolás Maduro regime, while Edgar fell victim to street crime, killed in a robbery where he was stabbed in the heart. Luis, my only surviving son, still lives under the threat of political persecution, miles away from me.

<div>Among my children, the most well-known is Oscar Alberto Pérez, a patriot and military officer who became a symbol of resistance against the Venezuelan dictatorship. Oscar refused to participate in the regime's crimes and corruption, choosing instead to fight for democracy, transparency, and a free Venezuela. His courage made him a target, and he ultimately paid the highest price in a violent confrontation broadcasted to the world—a scene that shocked many and fueled the fight for freedom in Venezuela.

<div>The name of my son, Oscar Pérez, has become synonymous of the Venezuelan fight for freedom. He was a man who refused to bow to tyranny, choosing instead to stand against oppression, even at the cost of his life. His story is one of heroism and sacrifice, a narrative that will one day be told in history books and, with hope, lead to justice being served in international courts for crimes against humanity.

<div>Oscar’s dedication to our country and our people came at a great cost to our family, particularly to me, his mother. Oscar would never have wanted to cause me pain, but his defiance against the regime brought us unbearable troubles. A month before Oscar's helicopter event, I was forced to flee Venezuela due to constant threats from the regime. I flew to Mexico to join my daughter-in-law and grandchildren. However, when Oscar carried out the helicopter operation, we were approached by "agents" sent from Venezuela. These individuals closely monitored us, waiting for Oscar to try to reach us. Our lives were filled with fear and tension, knowing that we were under constant surveillance and in

<div>imminent danger. After Oscar’s death, the regime took all our properties, leaving us with nothing and at risk of more attacks.
</div>
<div>In the United States, our situation became even more desperate. I was detained and imprisoned under inhumane conditions, with no access to information about my grandchildren, my daughter-in-law, and most distressingly, nothing about my son Oscar. Oscar had become internationally known for his courage, but all the news I could get about him came from brief reports on Univision, when the journalist Jorge Ramos mentioned his case, and I was able to watch TV in prison. The constant fear of being sent back to a country where the regime had already torn our lives apart wore me down every day, as I tried to hold onto hope through both physical and emotional pain.

<div>Although I eventually obtained political asylum in the United States, I arrived without financial resources and without a support network. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to live in a homeless shelter, and even now, we are still living in poverty, struggling to get by.
</div>
<div>My health has also been severely affected. I suffered a massive heart attack, and I am currently battling breast cancer. Despite everything, my spirit is still strong. I believe I’m alive today because “the Lord and my two sons are watching over me, and they hear my wish to live long enough to see the oppressive regime fall.”

<div>My story is a powerful reminder of the price of freedom and the resilience of those who fight for it. I need the support of all who value democracy and human rights. Soy madre de tres hijos—Oscar, Edgar y Luis—y he soportado pérdidas y sufrimientos inimaginables. Mi hijo Oscar fue perseguido y brutalmente asesinado por el régimen de Nicolás Maduro, mientras que Edgar fue víctima de la delincuencia común, asesinado cuando intentaron robarle y fue apuñalado en el corazón. Luis, mi único hijo sobreviviente, sigue viviendo bajo la sombra de la persecución política, a miles de kilómetros de mí.

Fue un hombre que se negó a doblegarse ante la tiranía, eligiendo en cambio enfrentarse a la opresión, incluso a costa de su vida. Su historia es de heroísmo y sacrificio, un relato que algún día será contado en los libros de historia y, con suerte, conducirá a que se haga justicia en tribunales internacionales por crímenes de lesa humanidad.

<div>La dedicación de Oscar a nuestro país y a nuestra gente tuvo un costo muy alto para nuestra familia, particularmente para mí, su madre. Oscar nunca habría querido causarme dolor, pero su desafío al régimen nos llevó a una terrible prueba. Un mes antes del evento del helicóptero de Oscar, me vi obligada a huir de Venezuela debido a las constantes amenazas del régimen. Viajé en avión para reunirme con mi nuera y mis nietos en México. Sin embargo, cuando Oscar realizó el evento del helicóptero, fuimos abordados por "agentes" enviados desde Venezuela. Estos individuos nos vigilaban de cerca, esperando que Oscar intentara reunirse con nosotros. <div>lograba obtener sobre él venía de breves informes en Univisión, cuando el periodista Jorge Ramos mencionaba su caso y yo podía ver la televisión en la cárcel. La incertidumbre y el miedo a ser deportada de regreso a un país donde el régimen ya había destruido nuestras vidas me consumían día tras día, mientras luchaba por mantener la esperanza en medio de un tormento tanto físico como emocional.

<div>Aunque finalmente logramos obtener asilo político en los Estados Unidos, llegamos sin recursos financieros y sin una red de apoyo. Durante la pandemia de COVID-19, nos vimos obligados a vivir en un refugio para personas sin hogar, y aún hoy permanecemos por debajo del umbral de la pobreza, luchando por sobrevivir.

<div>Mi salud también se ha visto gravemente afectada. Sufrí un ataque cardíaco masivo y actualmente estoy luchando contra el cáncer de mama. A pesar de estas dificultades, mi espíritu permanece intacto. Creo que estoy viva hoy porque “el Señor y mis dos hijos interceden por mi vida y escuchan mi deseo de vivir para ver caer al régimen opresor.”

<div>Mi historia es un poderoso recordatorio del precio de la libertad y la resiliencia de quienes luchan por ella. Necesito el apoyo de todos los que valoran la democracia y los derechos humanos. Al ayudarme, honran la memoria de mis hijos y apoyan la causa más amplia de la libertad en Venezuela.
