My brother Steve Rodgers is the longtime owner of The Space, The Outer Space and The Ballroom in Hamden CT. Many of you also know him as the singer in our band, Mighty Purple. Steve has spent decades working to build a stronger music community in Connecticut, touching countless lives with his music, mentoring up-and-coming musicians and engineers, and providing a safe space for music and community to thrive.
Steve had to close his longtime businesses in December 2017 and take extended time off of work due to health issues. He had abdominal surgery and surgery on his vocal cords over the winter of 2017-2018; both surgeries went well, and were largely covered by insurance. However, he was unable to work for a few months, and had to take time off from even speaking while his voice healed, which has hobbled his family financially.
Thankfully, Steve's original business, The Space, was bought by a good friend and will be reopening as The Rough Draft. However, the new owners of Steve's other venues, The Outer Space and The Ballroom, have declined to pay Steve for the transfer of the businesses in a disputed exchange that has left Steve and his family with additional debts and legal fees.
Steve's health is slowly recovering, and he will be attending the New Haven benefit concert Stand Up For Steve on April 15th, 2018, at Toad's Place, and even singing a few songs. An additional Stand Up For Steve event will be happening simultaneously at Best Video in Hamden, CT.
This GoFundMe is specifically to help Steve's family financially during this difficult time, and is operating in conjunction with the multiple Stand Up For Steve events on April 15th. For those of you who live far away or can't attend, please consider supporting Steve's family here.
Steve worked for years with a dedicated staff against continual financial challenges to create venues where musicians could thrive and community could flourish. He's a go-getter, dedicated to his work, family and community. Let's come together to show him and his family that they aren't alone during a difficult season.
