James Starbuck is one dynamic boy. He is a proud JROTC cadet, lover of band, choir, a youth DJ on KDNK's Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program, and adaptive skier with Challenge Aspen! He would be a senior at Glenwood Springs High School....but James' leg was badly injured at the end of last school year.
While James spends most of his time in a wheelchair, since his most recent injury, he has not been able to bear weight on his right leg even long enough to make transfers safely. Because of this, James has lost the independence he has fought so hard to gain.
August 15th, James underwent extensive leg reconstructive surgery. For all those that like specificity, the procedures were: bilateral distal femoral extension osteotomy, patellar advancement/ reallignment, and tibial tubercle osteotomy. This is a 6 hour+ procedure that we hope will be the first step of many along James' year plus rehabilitation.
During this process, James' family has had to travel to Denver's Children's Hospital repeatedly, purchase a wheelchair accessible van, pay for lodging, gas, and food. James' post operative appointments will occur at 2 weeks and 6 weeks following an intensive 6 weeks of bed rest and healing. When he gets the doctor's clearance, the family will have to return to Denver for a 7-10 day inpatient rehab where James will have to relearn how to bear weight on his legs, take steps in his walker, and make transfers safely.
He has the most wonderful positive attitude, and is always the first person to greet you with a smile. With best hopes, a lot of hard work, and support from you, James hopes to be back at it as soon as he can.
