Staff Stride to Save Local Charity!

Tax deductible
In 2003 the charity Allerton Bywater Community Partnership was created to support the regeneration of The Old School in Allerton Bywater. The Old School was opened in 1898 and operated as the village primary school until the school was moved to it's current site. The building fell derelict and was scheduled to be demolished as part of the Millennium Village redevelopment. Due to the public outcry at the potential loss of the building a Section 106 Agreement was put in place and the former infant school was refurbished in the winter of 2003. The site is the home of ABC Daycare and Ozone, who have 2 separate annex buildings in the grounds of Vicars Court, and provide excellent childcare to children from the age of 6 weeks old.

Before Covid hit the building was a thriving part of our community, with regular groups such as Brownies, Rainbows, Woodcraft, Karate and Yoga using the facilities. The building was also supported by local schools and social care groups, including Brigshaw High School, to hold regular staff training, meetings and to support vunerable groups. The facilities were regularly used by Garforth NET to support Dementia in the community and ensure that families got the well deserved support and breaks they needed.

ABC Daycare was a thriving nursery that had seen many families start in their baby room and go all through the nursery returning for out of school care without the need for advertisement. They have and continue to support a variety of children from vulnerable backgrounds as well as children with additional needs. They are able to offer funded places and play a big part in the local community by holding events such as Halloween Discos and Easter Bingos.

The staff who work on both premises are extremely committed and several have worked in the setting for more than 10 years. However the last year has been extremely difficult for everybody and nobody could have predicted the situation and the devastating effect Covid would have on the Charity. Unfortunately Covid has meant that they have been unable to hold any of their fundraising events. During the initial lockdown the nursery stayed open in order to offer support for the children of keyworkers when many others closed. Due to this they had to make some tough decisions in regards to their staff and sadly after this period lost a lot of income from families who had either lost jobs due to Covid or just simply did not feel comfortable sending their children to nursery with the pandemic at it's peak.

Although things are steadily increasing for the Charity and the number of children attending is increasing, they are currently in a position where they are not making ends meet and the stark reality is that if they do not manage to raise some much needed funds the doors will have to close indefinitely.

Due to this meetings have been held with staff and parents which have now driven a community outcry. The thought of the impact on not only the families and staff but also on the wider community due to Vicars Court being used as a community space has driven fundraising in a range of different forms.

On Friday 15th January the Staff will be completing a minimum of 24 miles in one day around Pontefract Racecourse. Many of the staff will be doing alongside their younger children. They will be doing this in Groups of 6 to meet Government restrictions however if the Tier System changes this may change. Either way rain or shine the miles will be completed!

Allerton Bywater Community Partnership have been improving the lives of the community for over 16 years and are desperate to continue. Without support this Charity will have no option to close within the next few months leaving a huge gap in the community. They urge the public to provide every bit of support and are looking for help from yourselves to save a charity that is on the brink of financial ruin.

It would be greatly appreciated if you can offer any support and help us publicise our current situation. This is a community pulling together after what can only be described as a disaster of a year.
