St Gregory the Theologian's Autobiography: A Diary

Donation protected
Hi there. My name is Doru Costache . I am an Orthodox Christian academic and priest. My academic profile can be found here , where you will discover many goodies to read in English, Romanian, plus a couple in Greek and one in Mandarin. The church to which I currently minister is St Gregory the Theologian's in Mona Vale NSW Australia. Here is its Facebook page , where you can find weekly reflections on the Sunday and the festal readings, quite often snippets about saintly women, less often information from the history of Romanian Christianity, even less often reflections about Australian Christianity, together with my sporadic musings about the ecclesial life. All this content is originally created by me and the friends of the church.

The money I raise by way of this campaign are meant for the production and the printing of a book I wrote, Saint Gregory the Theologian's Autobiographical Poem: A Diary. It records my reflections on St Gregory's Homeric-like poem on his life. The reflections on which this book is based were originally offered on the Facebook page of the church, beginning at the end of 2017. Now I present them fully redrafted. My commentary does not address each verse, but I comment on many of its lines. In these reflections I propose glimpses of the saint's portrait as he presented himself. Some of the things he shares with the reader do not match his current scholarly assessment of his character. It's a surprising read, and on many levels. In my reflections I try to capture the freshness of his views of the church, society, culture, and life, his pains and aspirations, together with his wisdom and wit. It has been an exciting journey of discovery, especially because for many years I went with the established view... I hope that my readers will experience the same joy of discovery when they will read my reflections, as well as the poem itself.

Within this volume, the reflections will be introduced by a study in which I try to capture the essence of St Gregory's poem, its spirit, its themes. A bibliography and an index of topics will conclude the book. The word-count of this volume sits at ca 100,000 words (including the introduction, the reflections, and the bibliography).

The beautiful cover of the volume is made by my friend, Ion Nedelcu , to whom I am deeply grateful. All of AIOCS Press covers are actually designed by him. The original icon on which the cover is based was painted in the thirteenth century, in the church of Saint George, Oropos, Attica, Greece (1240-1250). It currently is found in the Byzantine Museum, Athens. I took the original photo on 4 December 2018.

All going well in terms of this fundraiser, I intend to have the book printed before the Orthodox celebration of Easter/Pascha in the early May 2021. God willing, the ebook will be out earlier.

Donors of $20 to $30 will receive the ebook of this volume by way of email once this campaign ends.

Donors of $31 to $40 will receive the ebook of this volume + one other ebook from AIOCS Press, of their choosing, by way of email once this campaign ends.

Donors of $41 to $50 will receive the ebook of this volume + two other ebooks from AIOCS Press, of their choosing, by way of email once this campaign ends.

Donors of more than $50 will receive the ebook of this volume by way of email once this campaign ends, and, in addition, should they wish it,  a copy of the book once it is printed. If they do not wish a printed copy, they will receive three other ebooks from AIOCS Press, of their choosing.

I am extremely grateful for your support. Stay safe! Be well!
