St Anthony Hall Alpha Chapter NAACP BLM Fundraiser

Dear Siblings of Saint Anthony Hall Alpha Chapter,

We hope that you and your loved ones are well and staying safe during these tense and unprecedented times. We understand that the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and too many others, as well as the ensuing nationwide protests, affect us all differently. We, the undergraduates, express our complete solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and condemn the systemic, prejudicial violence that has led to these tragedies. Further, we believe it is vital to recognize that these are not isolated incidents but part of a larger structure of anti-Black discrimination and violence that has been perpetuated for far too long.

In this time of deep national reflection, it is crucial that we Alphas address our own history as we begin to create a more inclusive and diverse future for ourselves. Although the Membership has made significant strides towards creating a more diverse and inclusive institution, for example, we are justly proud of having been among the first chapters of a national college fraternity to have admitted female members, we undergraduates know that we have much work to do to reach our goal of truly being a community that embraces and promotes members of all identities.

With this in mind, the current officer corps has organized an Alpha-Chapter fundraiser. We have carefully selected to donate to the NYC branches of Black Lives Matter and the NAACP.  These organizations have demonstrated a strong dedication to combating systemic racism in our country. We humbly encourage Alphas to contribute to our fundraiser, in hopes of realizing a more equitable future. Furthermore, to amplify the impact of our fundraiser, we will donate through corporate matching programs, which pledge to multiply donations to organizations that combat systemic racism.

This fundraiser is the first step of a much larger journey the officer corps is undertaking in pursuit of a more diverse and inclusive future. We are thankful that united through siblinghood, we are able to tackle these tough issues together, and are keen to hear any suggestions for further initiatives. The officer corps is discussing the introduction of a formalized, chapter-wide educational program in order to reckon with our past as an institution, as well as the possibility of creating a financial aid program to alleviate unnecessary barriers. With the ongoing support and commitment of all Alphas, we are confident that these goals will become a reality.
