Trinidad Flood Relief: Helping Students and Schools Recover
On October 19 and for a few days following, citizens of Trinidad were inundated with significant rainfall that led to historic floods in many areas throughout the country. While relief efforts are underway to provide food; personal and household items; and cleaning supplies, significant assistance will be needed for some time to come.
This effort is aimed at providing support for students, teachers and their schools to return to a state of normalcy as quickly as possible. While the government provides amounts between USD$100 and $175 per student to replace books and supplies, these grants are far from enough to cover the needs of these students.
Our aim is to provide supplementary support to teachers and students in extreme circumstances compounded by the recent floods, particularly those students who are preparing for final examinations in mid-2019. Additionally, some schools would have lost critical teaching supplies, which this fund will seek to assist in replacing. We anticipate making distributions from this fund beginning mid-November when requests can be verified. Regular updates will be made to this post on disbursement activities, while maintaining the dignity and privacy of the recipients – we will not subject recipients to having to pose for photos when receiving your gifts. Every donation will make a difference to someone in the education system.
This effort is being coordinated by three citizens of Trinidad and Tobago who are currently residents in the USA.
Dr. Denzil A. Streete, born in Morvant, Trinidad, is the Assistant Director of Diversity at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Denzil’s activity in this space has included the annual collection and distribution of books to school libraries in Trinidad.
Dr. Hakim M.A. Williams, born in Laventille, Trinidad, is an Associate Professor of Africana Studies and Director of Peace and Justice Studies at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, PA. Hakim conducts research at schools and community organizations in Trinidad, and regularly leads conflict resolution workshops in communities in Trinidad.
Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs was born and raised in Arima, Trinidad. She is an organizer and entrepreneur. She has founded two clothing lines and currently is the Director of Community Engagement at Women's March. She is based in New York City.
