From 24th February 2020, SSPSSR colleagues will be participating in 14 days of strike action in relation to the UCU pay and conditions dispute (more information on the dispute can be found here)
Precarious colleagues offered their full support to the USS Pension strike in 2018 and the more recent pay and conditions strike in Nov/Dec 2019, and were hit hard by pay deductions. In solidarity with them, we hope to encourage generous donations to allow all staff, regardless of precarity, to join us on the picket line for this strike without substantial impact on their livelihoods.
Why do we need a top-up fund?
While the union has a strike hardship fund of up to £75 per day, there is a huge swathe of Hourly Paid Lecturers (HPLs), Assistant and Associate Lecturers (AALs), Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs), part-time and fixed term staff who are in an incredibly precarious position and who will be left with a potentially drastic shortfall to their income.
Staff with these contracts will be under severe financial hardship due to the length of the strike, and the hard-line position taken by management around pay deductions. For an HPL or AAL, each hour of lost teaching equates to a devastating loss of funds in the post-Christmas period.
Their April/May pay packet may be very slim.
We need your support so that precarious strikers can still feed their kids, meet the rent or pay for transport in a few months time.
Who will benefit from your donation?
We will prioritise topping up the strike funds of AALs, HPLs & GTAs from SSPSSR, portioning a fair amount to everyone who applies according to percentage of loss.
Whilst unlikely due to the large number of precarious staff in SSPSSR, any left over funds will be pooled with other schools to assist where possible.
