Help Start Up the SSEC Accessible Garden

Donation protected
This year, I am working with the South Shore Educational Collaborative to develop a new, accessible garden space and curriculum outside of their pre-existing greenhouse. The South Shore Educational Collaborative has been serving students with special needs, and who require extensive therapeutic and medical interventions, for over 30 years. After having worked at the Collaborative for many years, I searched for a way to spend more time outside with the students in a place where they can participate in and enjoy the natural world. With the addition of an outdoor garden space complete with raised beds for more comfortable access from both seated and standing positions, the Collaborative will have an interactive component to their science, health and nutrition, and cooking curriculum and the students will have a safe and comfortable space where they can spend time outside. This project will also help me complete my major in Accessible Farm-Based Education from Green Mountain College.

The objectives for this project are as follows:
1. Redesigning the interior of the pre-existing greenhouse for efficiency, accessibility, and productivity
2. Building an accompanying outdoor garden area for increased food production capability
3. Designing an annual production plan for the students to effectively and consistently produce food from the greenhouse and garden
4. Working with the faculty and staff of the Community Program to create a curriculum for the students which addresses the work that needs to be done in the greenhouse throughout the year
5. Encouraging teachers to bring their classes outside or into the greenhouse where the students can experience the outdoors, learn basic ecology, and discover a connection between themselves, the outdoors, and their food
6. Working with therapists to include the new greenhouse programs into physical and occupational therapy programs

Your donation will be used towards the materials needed for the construction of a more accessible garden environment, including lumber, hardware, and soil amendments to build raised beds and trellising, an upright and adapted composter, adapted planting and gardening tools such as trowels, hand forks, hoses, and hose attachments, and accompanying functional academic curriculum supports. I greatly appreciate any and all donations and your acknowledgement of the intensive needs of each of our amazing students.
