Sri Lanka Volunteer Trip 2019

Donation protected
Hey everyone!

From August 5th - September 27th I will be volunteering in Sri Lanka with SLV.Global, an organisation which aims to focus on global mental health by providing volunteers with opportunities to gain psychology work experience in various communities that need extra support.

Throughout my time in Sri Lanka, I will be working alongside trained mental health psychologists, gaining a minimum of 40 hours of hands on experience where my team and I will be planning and conducting project sessions five days a week which promote positive mental health, overall well being and increased confidence for those in the community. This work will be in both clinical (psychiatric hospitals) and community (schools, temples,  etc) settings.

Due to working in schools and vocational training institutes, I will be using my knowledge to work with students to further develop skills such as decision making, problem solving, creative and critical thinking, self awareness and how to cope with emotions and stress among others. I will be providing extracurricular English lessons in children's development centres, primary schools and after school clubs to children who are marginalised by poverty and other circumstances.

Alongside working with psychiatric facilities, I will also be involved with working with individuals with additional needs, such as autism or brain injuries. This will require me to use my knowledge of developmental psychology to unlock the creative potential of these patients through various forms of treatment.

Throughout this entire experience, I will be given the opportunity to immerse myself in the Sri Lankan culture and will be provided with first hand experience into other avenues that people may explore to increase their mental health rather than seeking out more traditionally Western options, like psychiatry.

The knowledge that I will gain from this experience will develop my skills as a psychologist and will provide me with a multitude of knowledge and first hand experience that I can use in both my current and future work and treatment of future patients.

Any money donated will go directly to supporting me in partaking in this volunteering opportunity which will allow me to provide an immense amount of help for marginalised and poverty stricken individuals in a country which has such obvious care deficit for those with mental health concerns and specific needs.

Thank you in advance for your donation, it is more appreciated than you know!
