Supporting the dream and home of blaQyard

Donation protected
Hey Everyone!

We are blaQyard. We are a collective of black queer artists based in Oakland and formed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 severely impaired our ability to pay full rent on time in 2020 as a household of working artists who lost all our jobs & gigs at that time. Despite the challenges and tragedy, we became present within ourselves and each other that this would be the opportunity to take the circumstance as a blank canvas to envision what we desire for ourselves collectively and independently, our home, and our community.

Our goal is twofold. We are raising funds to:
1) keep one of our members in the Bay Area; and
2) secure rent relief to pay our rent debt.

We urgently need $4,500 by March 31st to meet our first goal.
After we reach $4,500, the remaining funds will pay off the remaining household members’ collective rent debt.

It is Black History/Futures Time, not just Month, and this is a tangible, direct way as reparations to support a group of Black queer folks who want to stay in the Bay and give back to our communities through our home. We’ve already had the opportunity to welcome and hold space in our home to host:

+  Meetings for Skywatchers: A Performing Arts Company for formerly homeless Tenderloin SRO residents
+  Mediation sessions for QTPOC groups
+  Retreats
+  Dance Parties
+  Garden workdays

We are calling on our communities, both close and extended, to invest in a group of black queer artists. Our minimum goal is $13k to pay off the rent debt; however through achieving our top financial goal of $20K, you help us self-actualize, save a bit for the eventual purchase of this property through a land trust, create a community space, and materialize our dreams, such as:

+  Utilizing our home as an artist residency for local and touring artists
+  Hosting workshops, events, and classes for the community and ourselves
+  Welcoming community to time bank in exchange for space use in our backyard/garden on garden workdays
+  Underground dance and performance venue in the heart of Oakland

blaQyard is excited and passionate about our space. We see its potential to genuinely reflect the foundation that we want to build and sustain ourselves and our creative practices. With this space, we can give the community, especially our marginalized communities, the reciprocity we give ourselves.

Join our journey by investing in us through contributions and sharing our story.

We thank you in advance for your continuing support!

With Much Love,
blaQyard
