Marathon for Educating Girls of Rural China

Friends and Family,
Greetings from beautiful Peking, on the eve of the 70th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The skies are blue, the traffic is snarling, and spirits are high.
I have recently made the wildly misguided decision to run in the Beijing Marathon this coming November 3rd - with zero distance-running experience and generally weak endurance. Call me crazy, but I had the opportunity to join this extremely popular race (where 150,000 people join a lottery for only 30,000 spots) through a professional connection at the wonderful Mackenzie Investments local China team - and figured I'd "challenge myself".
I realized shortly thereafter I could make this about more than slaying some personal demons, and decided to use the race as a fundraiser for an absolutely amazing Canada-based, China-focused charity, called Educating Girls of Rural China , where young women in severely socio-economically disadvantaged regions of Western China are provided the chance to escape the cycle of poverty and study in Beijing. EGRC has helped over 1000 girls avoid being left behind in these relatively backward regions, where hardship and proclivity towards sons results in slim hopes of a better life. The girls that are sent to school have achieved a 99% graduation rate.
At my goal of roughly CAD$1000, we can send a rural girl to school in Beijing for an entire academic year - all expenses covered. In terms of the run itself... I'm gaining confidence, and am now up to about 18 kms in my most recent trot, but I could certainly use some motivation. Helping me get to that goal will definitely put some jump in my step on the quest to (an almost absurd distance of) 42 kms.
Please consider a bit of cash towards the cause - a little goes a very long way. Chances are extremely good I'm never going to run one of these again anyway, so let's make this one count!
Yours, in charity and insanity,
Noah Fraser
