• On the morning of May 18, 2017, Tom Heller, husband, pop-pop, friend and our dad was critically injured in a tragic motorcycle accident. The accident resulted in the loss of his left leg above the knee, use of his left arm and hand, and numerous injuries that has required a total of 8 surgeries. Due to the loss of mobility, numerous house modifications had to made in order for our dad to live and function at home. This past November, he required a specialized extensive surgery transferring nerves to regain use of his left arm. The doctor in the Hospital of Special Surgery performing this 13 hour procedure fell outside of his insurance coverage resulting in a huge out of pocket expense, but we all felt there was no other option for his quality of life. Unfortunately, due to the slow growth of nerves, it could take a year to see the positive results of the surgery requiring many months of intensive therapy.
Anyone who knows “TH” is well aware of the determination and positive attitude he possesses. He is working hard at physical therapy learning to walk with a prosthetic, and occupational therapy to regain use of his arm and hand. It's been extremely challenging and trying at times and the road ahead is very long, but he is determined to succeed and resume his “new normal” enjoying his life with his loving family and friends.
With the new year came new obstacles. Changes in healthcare have capped the amount of therapy that’s afforded, and along with copays, transportation, doctor bills, and numerous other expenses, that we have decided it is time to ask for some assistance.
Please help us continue to move forward and be part of our dad’s progress, a donation in any amount will be so appreciated and allow our dad to continue to heal and return to his everyday life.
