Squarrel emergency relief fund

47249732_1586714709980580_r.jpegWe are Squarrel Café  located at Brooklyn, New York. We are one of the thousand local businesses that have to close our door due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To whom may not already know us, we are a boardgame café that opened just seven months ago. Although we are not opened for long, it all began with a cartoonish dream years ago. In the dream, there were squirrels gathering in a large square, playing all kinds of boardgames. This is one of the reasons why we name it “Squarrel” which it is a word created by us combining the words “square” and “squirrel” – where “square” symbolizes a place for people to gather and “squirrel” symbolizes New Yorkers because cute squirrels lives everywhere in the city.

As millennial, we see the benefits of electronic devices and yet all types of social media becoming indispensable, but we are also reminiscent of our childhood time when we made friends by simply gathering people and playing games. We want to keep that simplicity while encouraging people to stay “unplugged.” We started to envision a café for people to play boardgames while enjoying quality tea and coffee brewed with love and passion by our lovely baristas. After detailed planning and research on café industry, we put our plan and everything we have into action and made Squarrel Café become reality. Our goal is to create a “stay-connected vibe” for our customers so they can spend more time with their friends and families in person.

Over this short period of time, a lot of people in the neighborhood have got to know us and started to love the brand. However, this pandemic hit us hard, the café is now facing an enormous difficulty of losing revenue. With that being said, we are unable to pay our rent or to keep our employees. We’re making every effort to comply with the government’s life-saving order of social distancing to support our front-line medical workers. However, this does not come without a cost. We have been closed for three weeks and it will be a while for New York City to be back to normal. We have tried all things we can to survive through this crisis, including asking funding from the government. However, the city government does not provide emergency loans to start-up small businesses. The banks were giving us hard times in applying for the federal emergency funding. Therefore, we would like to ask for your generous help in raising $25,000 to sustain our business. With this amount, it can help us pay our rent and secure jobs for our passionate baristas.

Our customers are our friends and families. We are looking forward to seeing all of you again enjoying our drinks and boardgames. We really hope to see the smile of all of you again when the battle is over. And to walk through the dark time, we need your help and support to continue serving our community.
