Sprucedale Crescent Restoration Project

On Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018 at 8:10 am, things changed on our street. The explosion and subsequent fire at 56 Sprucedale Crescent quickly impacted the lives of many. We lost one of our neighbours in the explosion.

One of the things that stands out in our minds, is how quickly everyone started to help. We witnessed people bringing coffees for others onto the bus that had been brought in by GRT. We watched the fire, police, ambulance, and other first responders all rush to the scene. Neighbours opened up their homes to other people. Red Cross came to lend a helping hand.

Our family wants to help the people heal. In doing so, we believe that we ourselves can start to heal. Our oldest son was home alone, along with the family dog at the time of the blast. He could have been injured, or worse. Everyone of us in this community have stories to tell.

The landscape will be forever changed in our neighbourhood. Rebuilding will take months. Quiet walks along our tree-lined street will bring with it memories of what happened that day. We need to come together as a community:  to cry, hug, laugh, talk, listen, and heal.

There are forty-three homes along Sprucedale Crescent, as well as dozens of others along bordering streets. So many families have been impacted. We would like to offer families a bench as a simple gesture of kindness, love and hope, so we may all start to move forward together. The benches can be placed in front yards, backyards, boulevards, wherever. These benches will hopefully encourage people to walk, rest, and visit with each other. We believe this is one step towards rebuilding our community.

We are asking for your help in reaching our goal, to help cover the costs of the benches. We would like to start delivering benches within the next week.

Thanks in advance.
