Sprague Disaster Relief Dance

Donation protected
It is human nature to want to help or do something in the face of disasters—either natural or man made. This has been a fall where natural disasters have come in larger numbers than we are accustomed to.

At Sprague, we’d like to coordinate donations to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and the Earthquake in Mexico.  In researching reputable charities, we found that what is needed most is cash.

Since giving money doesn’t always hold meaning to children, we are organizing a “Dance Tribute” in which students can participate and family members can sponsor them with a donation.  The "Sprague Disaster Relief Dance Tribute” will take place during school on Friday, October 6th.  Students learned dances in music class that honor citizens from afflicted areas.

Students will participate in the following dances at our school gathering on Friday:
- La Raspa –from Mexico
- Cotton Eyed Joe—from Texas
- Merengue—from the Caribbean islands

(Please note that the ‘Dance Tribute’ is not a performance. It should be a low-key, fun way for students to become aware of this need and do something concrete to help.)

Sprague PTO Community Service Chair Peggy Collier has graciously offered to coordinate donations to support those affected by Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and the Earthquake in Mexico.
We have identified two charitable organizations to receive our donations: Hispanic Foundation UNIDOS Disaster Relief (https://hispanicfederation.org) to support victims in Puerto Rico and Mexico, and Americares (https://www.americares.org/en/)
to support victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Both are 4-star rated charities. At the end of the campaign, Peggy will withdraw the funds and donate half to the Hispanic Foundation and half to Americares on behalf of the Sprague School.

Please consider supporting our dancing “Spraguers” with a donation in their honor to help those who need it right now. In addition, please consider posting this campaign to your Facebook page to encourage friends and family to donate, too. We are aiming for a $4,000 goal and can only reach it with your help!

We hope our students see the connection between our HEART values (Helping, Effort, Acceptance, Responsibility, Teamwork) and this event. Everyone can do something! Big, little, young or old….help us make a difference!

Sincerely,

Susan Snyder, Principal, Sprague School
