My name is Dan Argent, I’m a Brisbane boy born and bred and I’ve been fortunate enough like a lot of us, to have been afforded a good education.
I think a lot of the time we can take education and our upbringing, a little for granted. It’s so important for a child to feel safe and supported and to be in an environment where their imaginative, growing minds can flourish.
My mum, is such a special woman and she was integral to my education. We didn’t have a lot of of money growing up, but she worked 3 jobs to make sure that I’d be able to go to a good school and have the best chance at life. I definitely saw how hard mum worked and employed the same drive toward my career as a real estate agent, which I’ve been really lucky to be successful in.
Ever since I started making money I’ve wanted to help kids doing it tough, in the same way that my mum helped me. So a few years ago I reached out to help local kids who, whether it was because of their home life or background or socio-economic situation, whatever reason, that they were struggling to get access to an education.
Once I started looking more and more into this I realised that there was so much more that could be done, both at home and overseas. And this was why I decided to setup the Butterfly Effect Foundation, a foundation that works with various charities around the world who provide opportunity to vulnerable children, such as Cambodian Children's Fund.
This year I’m raising money by doing a trek to Everest Base Camp, it’s called Sponsor a Step. So the way it works is that I’m covering all of the costs to head over to Nepal then I’m calling for people to donate $1 for every step (and there are 165,000 by the way). This money will go to the Foundation and be split between the charities to help children in Australia and Cambodia to have a better life through education.
I feel so passionate about this because it’s a chance to pay it forward, and to give children the same opportunities in life that most of us have had.
No matter how much you’re able to donate, by taking that first step you’re helping to empower a child with the gift of education.
