What is TALMA?
Thanks to the generosity of our parters at The Schusterman & Steinhardt foundations, along with funders like you, each summer, TALMA, The Israel Program for Excellence in English, opens more than 150 summer school classrooms throughout low-income communities in Israel's social and geographic periphery. These classes serve as an 11th month of learning that aim to close social, achievement, and opportunity gaps within underserved communities.
Why do we exist?
Students in Israel are entitled to three hours of weekly English education during the regular school year; however, due to a severe deficit of qualified educators, most students receive a fraction of that, and what little they do receive is often from teachers who struggle with English themselves.
While TALMA is not yet in a position to staff the hundreds of underserved classrooms across Israel throughout the school year, we are able to offer a summer accelerator during which students receive 25 weekly hours of English from two educators - including a native English speaker with a teaching certification - over the course of three weeks. During these 75 hours of English summer school, TALMA students receive more high quality hours of English education in a single summer than most children in Israel's periphery receive in an entire school year. In essence, TALMA acts as an accelerator - raising students' conversational abilities, comprehension, and confidence of English as foreign language.
What makes TALMA special?
TALMA isn't just any education program, it is a social movement made possible by the dedication of passionate educators who believe so strongly in the importance of educational equity that they volunteer their teacher talents. Our educators - or, TALMA Fellows, as we call them - are moved and motivated by TALMA's vision that English, as the lingua franca, is a tool that can enable low-income children to unleash their potential, break poverty cycles, open doors, access opportunities, and enable their voice to be heard on a global stage.
These teachers bring their talents to the inspiring location of Israel which serves as the ideal backdrop for learning how to lead and create social change within complex systems and environments.
TALMA teachers serve students from every population within Israel, from Jewish-Israelis to Arab-Israelis, Bedouin, Druze, Muslims, Christians, Hebrew Israelites, Palestinians, and the beautiful spectrum of ALL of Israel's children.
Who is behind this campaign?
This campaign - managed and promoted by alumni TALMA teachers - seeks to raise funds to cover the costs of launching one TALMA classroom that will serve up to 35 children from an underserved community where TALMA serves. If we hit our goal, our generous partners at The Schusterman Foundation and Steinhardt Foundation will match our donation to double our impact - thereby funding a second classroom for Summer 2020 - creating educational opportunity for an additional 70 children.
We appreciate every dollar, and hope our story shared below will serve to inspire you to donate, share our story, or, if you are a teacher, apply to join us in Israel for 2020. This is our story...
Who are the TALMA teachers and Why Israel?
TALMA brings professional, English-speaking, educators from around the globe to join our summer and full-year community in Israel. The program turns Israel into a lab for educators of all races, nationalities, and religions to explore how an increasingly diverse and entrepreneurial nation devises innovative solutions to deal with deep-rooted and multi-dimensional social and economic challenges. By living, learning, and teaching together, TALMA Fellows form a network of powerful and influential change-makers who take the lessons they learn in Israel and bring them back to their communities around the world.
So, what does it take to open one TALMA classroom in Israel?
One inspirational teacher = One joyful classroom = One step closer to the goal of 'one day.'
$7,500 enables TALMA to open one classroom providing 35 students with access to our summer school. 15 instructional days, this breaks down to just under $15 a day for each student to receive a summer school education with TALMA.
At $15 a day, are you willing to sponsor one day of summer school for a deserving child to join TALMA's summer school English program?
That amount covers the cost of:
• Supplies to provide students with a hands-on curriculum focused on project based learning
• Bringing a highly qualified teacher who is a native English speaker to serve the students in Israel
• Hiring a local educator who receives a stipend to serve as a co-teacher while receiving professional development to encourage carrying the strategies learned during the summer into the regular school year.
• Daily meals for each child to ensure they receive at least one nutritional meal during the day.
• Enrichment programs to supplement traditional classes with specials such as English music, dance, and yoga
Call to Action
For just a small donation of $15, you'll help sponsor a day of TALMA for a child who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in a meaningful summer learning experience... And for $75, you could cover an entire week of TALMA for a deserving student!
If 100% of TALMA's 500 alumni each donate $15, we'll meet our goal and cover the cost of opening a classroom for 35 underserved children....PLUS, our funders will match what we give to double our impact!
Consider this...if you share your TALMA story with your friends and family and ask them to chip in for #OneDay of TALMA classes to give a child (picture your favorite TALMA student!) a chance to attend TALMA, we could surpass our goal and make a world of a difference for an entire community of children.
