Sponsor a Prosthetic in Nepal

Donation protected
As someone who has spent several months getting to know Nepal, I have become aware of the social issues that the country is currently tackling and have had the great pleasure of becoming involved with several humanitarian efforts that are making a tremendous positive impact on society. One of the efforts I’ve personally become invested in is a project at the Sahaj Community Hospital in Nawalparasi that provides prothesis limb services to those in need.

From Jan 17 to Feb 21, the Sahaj Community Hospital hosted an Artificial Limb Fitment Camp, resulting in the distribution of over 450 prosthesis limbs free of cost. These services were brought to the hospital by Jaipur Foot — an Indian-based organization which uses low-cost, high-speed prothesis limb technologies that are some of the most effective in the region. The initiative's target beneficiaries consisted of physically disabled people who lacked the economic ability to purchase an artificial limb without financial support. They came from across the country, including some of Nepal's most remote areas, to receive these services.

This camp was a great success with an average of 15 beneficiaries served daily and directly impacted the lives of 418 beneficiaries. In addition, it also created the grounds for the establishment of a permanent center at the hospital, designed to provide sustained artificial limb services as well as post-visit services. The hospital was able to receive support from Chaudhary Foundation on the establishment of the center and the human resources to operate the center, but now needs the funds for the raw materials to make the limbs.

This is where we need your help… In order to continue to provide these much-needed services to anyone free of cost, we are looking for funding from you for these raw material costs. With each limb costing around $150 USD and with the goal to raise enough funds for 65 limbs, the aim of this campaign is to raise around $10,000 USD.

It was truly moving to see the reactions and hear the stories of the beneficiaries who arrived at the camp feeling inferior but left with a boosted morale and with great confidence only within a couple hours! Here are a few of the many inspiring stories of lives changed at Sahaj:

When Indira was 6-months-old, she lost both of her legs in a house fire. Indira said she always felt “alone” and was “afraid” she would never get a job or find a husband. However, those days are over: She was given two prosthesis legs on Jan. 17 during the Artificial Limb Fitment Camp in Nawalparasi. Now Indira said she is “happy” and has plans to find a job and live the life she’s always dreamed of.

The first thing Suk said was, “I feel different.” He said the alienation started over 30 years ago after a bus accident that left him without a leg. But Suk said he wants to walk again and finally has “confidence” that he will thanks to the new prosthetic leg he received on Jan. 17 during the Nawalparasi camp. During the camp, Suk said he was “inspired” by everyone around him and that alone could drive him to learn how to walk again.

Dhan said she works hard every day to be nice so she can be happy. After all, her first piece of advice is always, “if you [are] nice, you will be happy.” However, despite her kindness, Dhan said she isn't truly happy because she has felt different for over 35 years. It started with losing her leg in a car accident. But with a big smile on her face, she proudly proclaimed she was “happy now” because she was able to walk for the first time in decades with her new prosthetic leg that she received on Jan. 17 during the Nawalparasi camp.

Your donation will help more people like Indira, Suk, and Dhan turn their lives around by providing them access to a prosthesis limb. I thank you in advance for your generous support and involvement with a project that will enhance the overall well-being of Nepal because everyone has the right to good health regardless of race, religion, gender, ability or income level.
