Lilac City Line Cook Collective

The coronavirus has upended the restaurant industry in Spokane and throughout many communities in America. Back of House workers are the lifeblood of any restaurant worth its salt, preparing and cooking meals under severe time constraints and scorching temperatures. BOH staff are generally underpaid, tip exempt or tip lite, and without benefits.

In this unprecedented moment where hundreds and perhaps thousands have lost their jobs here in Spokane, workers have found themselves walking a tightrope and unsure of how or if they will be able to keep a roof over their heads. The timeline for life to return to normal is unknown and abstract and has induced anxiety among many low wage workers.  While it is still unknown how the economic system will try and correct for these anomalies— through rent moratoriums for tenants and mortgage moratoriums for homeowners— we can attempt here to minimize the impact of this crisis on the invisible ones in the service industry.

This GofundMe and any capital raised through it is first and foremost to provide emergency aid for local BOH employees, primarily to stop evictions and pay necessary bills to get through this astounding crisis. It is the intention also to use the first 500 dollars to file for a 501c4 status non-profit which will aim to provide the same emergency aid and a safety net for our local boh employees.

We will aim to provide need first and foremost to employees with children and those with traditional barriers to employment, especially LGBTQ and minority and undocumented employees.

Spokane's network of culinary talent is large, yet very close and building a database of those in need will be necessary but also doable.
