Splinter Brothers Warehouse Purchase

My dear friends, loves, supporters, benefactors, and benevolent strangers. .

I’ve had a dream for a long time. A dream that many people over the years have reflected back to me. A dream about collective space, housing, the arts, and sustainability. In one week, I turn 40, and I now have the opportunity to make that dream come to life.  Today I signed a purchase agreement to buy the Splinter Collective Warehouse-the place I and my family have been living for the last 8 years. It’s a dream space. The previous owner, Elizabeth, built the infrastructure of her dream that involved a stage in a gorgeous courtyard for performance events. But life kept her further away from Tucson than she would have liked to execute that dream. The owner before her, also a woman, built out the inside of the loft I live in now.  The building has a long history in the arts. Since living there, I’ve heard countless stories about the legendary parties that used to happen here. There was once a giant mural gracing the side of the building and several articles written about the building that you can see on the website Elizabeth put together.  http://www.splinterbros.com/

This notable, historic building has been owned by 2 women before me.  That is incredibly unusual. And in keeping with the tradition of the building, Elizabeth is now selling it to me. I want to keep the vision of Splinter Bros/Sisters/Collective alive and thriving.  I want to keep moving the building into the future, and I know that I am the one to do it. I want to utilize our event space more frequently, and center the practices of QTPOC artists, women artists, political artists, border artists and support the ever diversifying arts scene in Tucson.

So here is my ask-money is first of course.  But there is so much more than that. I have invested in community since the moment I could. I believe that community is our best resource, inspiration and safety net. I believe that we are each other's best chances for survival, and I believe in creating resources that are meant to be used by the people.

I want to own and cultivate this amazing place that centers the needs and values of our community, and I need your help.  I’m close. Really close. But I'm asking for your support.

The building costs $600,000.  Because it is a commercial property, that means a 30% down-payment.  That’s $180,000. That’s a HUGE amount of money, and I’ve been tapping every resource, working as much as possible, and committing all of my family’s resources and savings to this dream.  Yet, even beyond the price of the building itself, I need to cover things like inspection ($1500), appraisal ($2500), loan origination fee ($4600), legal advice ($1000), LLC formation fees ($385) and other things that add up rather fast.

So.  Any amount you can offer helps secure this space.  If I’ve supported you in the past, now is the time that I’m making my big ask.  I don’t want any presents for my birthday, I don’t want a party, I never want to be paid back.  I want this building for our collective future.

If you can’t give yourself, I’m asking you to send this to a few people who might support this dream.  I’m prepared to offer a lot in exchange.
