Spinathon For GWG Ladies and the SC15 Club
Sports Club 15 (SC15) , a branch of the Special Olympics. Based in Blanchardstown.
SC15 was set up as a Special Olympics Club by parents in January 2004 to create a local club where young people with special needs could meet for sport and have a community base. Since then SC15 has gradually expanded, with now over 60 athletes and 30 volunteers in 4 clubs (as well as an Athlete Leadership Programme, ALPs, for over 16s). In 2014 we celebrated our tenth anniversary. Many of our athletes have competed in Special Olympics National Games. In 2017 two competed internationally for the first time, in the World Winter Games; in 2018 two athletes went to the World Summer Games.
In 2017 SC15 became only the second club in Ireland to obtain the ‘Club Recognition Award’ from Special Olympics.
(Even during the pandemic we have continued to operate, by Zoom, with weekly sessions for the Saturday and basketball clubs.)
The club is totally run by volunteers, many of whom are parents or siblings of athletes, but there are also many young people from the community, such as Transition Year students. Parents pay a small sub to help pay for hall/pitch rental and equipment; we also fund-raise for other needs, such as kit and transport to competitions, by bag packing and sponsored events.
The Garda Westmanstown Gaels GAA Ladies section are extremely proud to be hosting this event in partnership with SC15. Half of monies raised will go to support SC15. We hope to see everyone around Westmanstown on July 31st.
