Speranza per gli orfani di Rakai (Uganda)

Sono tornata da poche settimane da un viaggio in Uganda.
E' stato un viaggio ricco di emozioni di ogni genere. Oltre ad aver festeggiato e gioito per il matrimonio del mio fratello adottivo, ho avuto la possibilità di visitare il centro Rakai Orphans Hope Project (ROHP) che io e la mia famiglia sosteniamo da diverso tempo.
ROHP è stato fondato da Joseph Rutaraka, il ragazzo, ormai un uomo, che io e la mia famiglia abbiamo sostenuto a distanza tramite Compassion fin da quando era bambino. Durante i suoi studi universitari effettuò numerose ricerche sul problema dell'HIV/AIDS nelle zone rurali del distretto di Rakai, scoprendo così, un elevato numero di bambini rimasti orfani proprio a causa della malattia dei genitori affetti. Joseph è sempre stato un ragazzo amorevole e premuroso: già da ragazzino dava una parte dei soldi che gli mandavamo ai bimbi più piccoli del vicinato che erano rimasti orfani, proprio come lui. Crescendo, il suo grande cuore non ha potuto fare altro che allargarsi ancora di più, vedendo il bisogno degli orfani e dei bambini vulnerabili di Rakai. Più di una volta ci ha detto “io sono il risultato delle vostre preghiere e del vostro sostegno. Quello che faccio è il mio modo per dire grazie a Dio e a voi, utilizzando il mio tempo per aiutare i bambini che, come me, non avevano speranza. Quello che voi avete dato a me, lo dono adesso agli altri". 
Questo è il cuore di ROHP: fondato da chi sa cosa vuol dire non avere più la mamma e il papà, doversi prendere cura dei fratelli più piccoli, non avere da mangiare e scappare da scuola per trovare un modo di racimolare qualcosa perché stare seduto davanti ad una lavagna non permetteva di portare da mangiare ai fratellini. Un bimbo cresciuto in una realtà difficile, che ha dovuto dire addio alla sua mamma che si consumava tra le sue braccia per colpa dell'HIV/AIDS, ma che in tanta sofferenza, ha trovato speranza attraverso una famiglia italiana lontana, che ha risposto in maniera affermativa alla chiamata che l'amore di Dio aveva messo nei loro cuori.
Non si può cambiare tanta sofferenza nel mondo in solo istante, ma si può cambiare la vita di uno o più bambini che a loro volta, crescendo, avranno un impatto incredibile sulle vite di altri, creando un effetto domino che non sarà fine a sé stesso, ma che avrà una continuità nel tempo.

In questo viaggio in Uganda, ho visto con i miei occhi le realtà che questi bambini vivono giorno dopo giorno. Una realtà che mi ha spezzato il cuore e continua a spezzarmelo tutte le volte che ci ripenso e che prego per loro. Ho avuto la possibilità di parlare singolarmente con le persone dei villaggi, che con occhi speranzosi mi esponevano il loro caso. Persone con cuori grandi che sanno cosa vuol dire aiutare, ma che non hanno la possibilità per farlo in maniera concreta. Ho davanti a me il volto di una donna, una nonna che ha perso di recente sua figlia, lasciandole 4 nipotini da accudire. Successivamente ho scoperto che questa nonna tiene in casa 10 bambini cercando un modo per potersi prendere cura di ognuno di loro. Solo il bambino più grande fa parte del programma ROHP. Come questi bambini, ce ne sono molti altri in lista d'attesa, molti altri che aspettano di entrare nel programma del centro ROHP, che però non ha abbastanza fondi per provvedere a tutti.

ROHP è impegnato in due progetti fondamentali:

- Programma di sostegno degli orfani e dei bambini vulnerabili. Al momento sono registrati 33 bambini del programma che prevede assistenza e cure mediche costanti (considerando che la maggior parte di loro sono affetti da HIV/AIDS, risulta fondamentale avere questo tipo di assistenza), il sostegno per le tasse e le spese scolastiche, consulenza e protezione legale. Alla fine di ogni trimestre, ROHP riunisce i bambini in due giornate speciali dove viene dato loro un insegnamento cristiano, la possibilità di giocare spensieratamente e di ricevere un pasto completo. All'interno di questo programma vengono sostenute anche 21 donne, le tutrici dei bambini. Alcune di loro sono le zie o le nonne di questi orfani, altre invece sono donne che non hanno nessun tipo di legame con il bambino, ma che decidono di prendersene cura portandolo in casa loro. Grazie all'aiuto di ROHP, anche queste donne hanno la possibilità di avere assistenza e cure mediche, e tramite il sostegno che viene dato ai bambini, hanno anche loro la possibilità di avere cibo, assistenza, consulenza e protezione legale.

- Programma di cura e prevenzione dell'HIV/AIDS e altre malattie. Questo programma è un aiuto pratico alle donne vittime di abuso o che sono costrette a prostituirsi. Il programma prevede il mantenimento di queste donne all'interno di un centro sicuro dove gli uomini non possono entrare. All'interno del centro le donne trovano assistenza e controlli medici per loro ed i loro figli. In questi centri hanno la possibilità di imparare dei lavori pratici che daranno loro modo di trovare un lavoro per mantenersi in maniera dignitosa, come ad esempio la creazione di bigiotterie e lavori quali parrucchiera, sarta e cuoca. Queste attività permettono loro giornalmente di stare lontano dalla strada ed essere protette all'interno di un luogo sicuro insieme ai loro piccoli.


Questi bambini, queste donne, chiedono il nostro aiuto.

Progetti più urgenti:

- Acquisto di un furgone per portare i bambini a scuola. Attualmente ognuno di loro percorre chilometri a piedi per raggiungere la scuola. L'acquisto di un furgone toglierebbe i bambini dal pericolo stradale che affrontano per andare e tornare da scuola.
- Acquisto di una macchinario per fabbricare quaderni, diari e materiale scolastico per risparmiare sui costi di acquisto, provvedere una garanzia di lavoro e quindi di sostentamento alle famiglie e per riuscire ad avere un piccolo ricavato di fondo per l'organizzazione.
- Lavori di ristrutturazione di alcuni fabbricati all'interno di un terreno che ci è stato donato per poter accogliere più bambini all'interno di un luogo sicuro dove poter giocare, studiare e dove ricevere il messaggio del Vangelo.

Ogni piccola donazione può aiutare un bimbo ad entrare all'interno del programma ROHP, per avere i diritti che ogni altro bimbo al mondo dovrebbe avere: diritto ad avere cibo, un rifugio sicuro, un'educazione e un'assistenza medica. Questi obiettivi sono solo la parte materiale di quello che è lo scopo principale dell'aiuto che vogliamo dare attraverso ROHP: restaurare la speranza nelle vite dei bambini e di tutte le persone del distretto di Rakai, attraverso l'amore di Gesù Cristo.

I came back from a trip to Uganda just few weeks ago.
It was a journey full of emotions of all kinds. In addition to have celebrated and rejoiced for the wedding of my adoptive brother, I had the opportunity to visit Rakai Orphans Hope Project (ROHP) which my family and I have been supporting for some time.
ROHP was founded by Joseph Rutaraka, the boy, now a man, who my family and I have sponsored through Compassion since he was a child. During his university studies he did extensive research on the problem of HIV / AIDS in rural areas of Rakai district, discovering, a large number of children who were orphaned because of the illness of the affected parents. Joseph has always been a loving and caring guy: as a young boy he used to give part of the money we sent to him, to the younger children around him who were orphans, just like him. Growing up, his big heart could not help but spread even further, seeing the need of Rakai's orphans and vulnerable children. More than once he told us "I am the result of your prayers and your support. What I do is my way to say thanks to God and to you, using my time to help children who, like me, had no hope. What you have given to me, I give it to others now ".
This is the heart of ROHP: founded by someone who knows what it means to no longer have mum and dad, to take care of younger siblings, not having what to eat and run away from school to find a way to raise something, because to be sat in front of a blackboard did not allow him to feed the younger siblings. A child raised in a difficult reality, who had to say goodbye to his mother who was consumed in his arms because of HIV / AIDS, but in so much suffering, he found hope through a distant Italian family, who responded in an affirmative way to the call of the love of God had put in their hearts.
You cannot change so much suffering in the world in an instant, but you can change the life of one or more children who, in turn, will have an incredible impact on the lives of others, creating a domino effect that will not have an end, but will have continuity over time.
On this trip to Uganda, I saw with my own eyes the realities that these children live day after day. A reality that has broken my heart and keeps breaking it every time I think about it and that I pray for them. I had the opportunity to speak individually with the people of the villages, who exposed their case to me with hopeful eyes. People with big hearts who know what it means to help, but who do not have the possibility to do it in a concrete way. I have before me the face of a woman, a grandmother who recently lost her daughter, leaving her 4 grandchildren to care for. Later I discovered that this lady keeps 10 children at home looking for a way to take care of each of them. Only the oldest child is part of ROHP program. Like these children, there are many others on the waiting list, many others waiting to enter ROHP program, which does not have enough funds to provide for everyone.

ROHP is engaged in two Programs:

- Support program for orphans and vulnerable children. At the moment there are 33 children registered in the program that provides constant care and medical care (considering that most of them are affected by HIV / AIDS, it is essential to have this type of assistance), support for taxes and school fees, counseling and legal protection. At the end of each school term, ROHP brings children together on two special days where they are given a Christian teaching, the chance to play and receive a full meal. 21 women, children's caretakers, are also supported within this program. Some of them are the aunts or grandmothers of these orphans, while others are women who do not have any kind of connection with the child, but they decide to take care of them taking them into their own house. Thanks to the help of ROHP, these women also have medical assistance and care, and through the support given to children, they also have the opportunity to have food, assistance, counseling and legal protection.

- Program for the treatment and prevention of HIV / AIDS and other diseases. This program is a practical help to women who are victims of abuse or who are forced into prostitution. The program provides care for these women at the safe center where men cannot enter. In the center these women find medical assistance and checkups are provided for them and their children. In these centers they have the opportunity to learn practical work that will allow them to find a job to support themselves in a dignified manner, such as the creation of fashion jewelry and manual jobs such as hairdresser, dressmaker and cook. These activities allow them daily to stay away from the road and be protected within a safe place with their children.

All these children, these women, ask for our help.

Urgent projects:

- Purchase a van to assist taking the children to school. Currently the kids walk miles by foot to get to school. By purchasing the van this will relieve the dangerous that the children will face when they are going back and forth to the school.
- Purchase of a machine to manufacture notebooks, diaries and school materials to save on purchase costs, provide a guarantee of work and therefore a support for families, and to be able to have a small amount of fund for the organization.
- Renovation work of some buildings on a land that has been donated to us to accommodate more children in a safe place where they can play, study and receive the message of the Gospel.

Each small donations can help a child to enter ROHP program, to have the rights that every other child in the world should have: the right to have food, a safe shelter, an education and medical assistance. These goals are only the material part of what is the main purpose of the help we want to give through ROHP: to restore hope in the lives of the children and of all the people of Rakai district, through the love of Jesus Christ.
