Spencer Swain's Medical Fund

As some of you may know, Spencer has not been feeling too well lately.  In November, he came down with something that resembled the flu.  He really was not feeling good, so he went to the doctor to get checked out.  While at the doctor, they did a CBC (Complete Blood Count) and realized his red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet levels were at a dangerously low level.  They immediately sent him to New Hanover Hospital.  Shortly after they sent him to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital via ambulance.  He arrived and immediately began getting blood transfusions and getting tests taken to try and determine what was happening to his blood levels.  After many tests and days in the hospital, they determined he has a very rare condition known as aplastic anemia.  This is a disease where Spencer's bone marrow doesn't produce enough blood cells to keep him healthy.  They sent Spencer home from the hospital, but he continues to go to Chapel Hill once a week and New Hanover once a week for check-ups.  He is not able to attend school right now, but continues to work on his studies from home.  In the meantime, Spencer's brother, Myles, got tested to see if he was a match for a bone marrow transplant.  He was a match!  Right now, final tests are being performed to make sure the transplant between Spencer and Myles goes smoothly.  If the transplant is a go, it will happen in January.  It will be a long process for Spencer with a 4-6 week hospital stay and then 100 days in the Ronald Mcdonald House after that.  The funds raised will go to help pay medical bills, travel expenses, lodging, and other expenses for family members that stay with Spencer throughout the process.  We cannot thank you enough for the support we have already and continue to receive.  We know God has a plan and is going to look out for our (not so) little man Spencer.  Even if you cannot donate at this time, please keep Spencer and our family in your thoughts and prayers.  We will continue to post updates so you can keep up with Spencer’s progress.
