Spencer Steere Memorial Fund

Donations will be raised for "Second Sports" at Second Baptist Church (North) in honor of Spencer Steere. The money raised will benefit athletic programs and provide new athletic equipment at the church. This church is where Spencer played ball a few times a week and also where he passed away during the best game of his life.



Spencer was born at the Windom Area Hospital in Windom, Minnesota on October 4th, 1965. He was raised on the family farm in rural Storden Jeffers area, Minnesota by his parents Arthur and Le Ann Steere. Spencer was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden, Minnesota.
 
Spencer graduated from Storden Jeffers High School in 1984. During his high school years he played football, basketball, and track, and also participated in FFA and the Southwest Trail Riders Association. He enjoyed tending horses and raising feeder hogs. Spencer’s memorable achievements included Homecoming King and all-conference in basketball and football.
 
Spencer attended Waldorf University in 1984 where he was on the basketball team there for 1 year. From there he went on the earn his Bachelor of Science degrees in Commercial Economics and Ag Business from South Dakota State University in 1989. His interests included SDSU Cheerleading, FarmHouse Fraternity, being a Resident Assistant, playing in various intramural leagues, and coordinating get-togethers with friends.
 
Spencer married Peggy Jean Reed on May 29th, 1992 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, South Dakota. Together, they raised 2 children including a daughter, Alexa (24), and son, Tyson (22). They started their family in Souix Falls, South Dakota and moved to St. Michael, Minnesota in 1999. In 2004, Spencer and his family moved to Kingwood, Texas.
 
Spencer’s primary occupation was sales. He was previously employed with Daktronics, Universal Underwriters Group, and Zurich, however was most recently with True Risk Advisors as a Vice-President.  
 
In his adult years, his favorite activities included the ‘Crown Royal Hunting Club’, playing in various basketball leagues, wine tasting, caring for his backyard pool and landscape, and hanging with friends by a fire pit. Another hobby he enjoyed was cheering on his favorite teams: Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Alabama football, University of Texas football, South Dakota State University football, and the Houston Astros. Spencer served in the community and was a passionate coach for his son in the Youth Kingwood Football League. Spencer was able to relive the glory days and participate in a Father Daughter 2 on 2 basketball tournament where they proudly earned 2ndplace.
 
Spencer passed away at Second Baptist Church doing what he loved while playing the best basketball game of his life. He is survived by his wife; Peggy Steere; his children Alexa Steere of Kingwood, TX and Tyson Steere of Indianapolis, IN; his parents Arthur and Le Ann Steere of Windom, MN; his brother Nathan Steere (Tonya, Sydney, Londyn, Sam) of Austin, TX and sister Darci Steere Wash (Todd, Alyssa, Jenae, Marcus) of Jacksonville, FL; father and mother in law Clair and Marlys Reed of Hot Springs Village, AK; brother in law Chad Reed (Wendy, Connor, Cameron, Caden) of Marshall, TX; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by grandparents Chester and Alice Jackels; grandparents Ernest and Augusta Steere; uncles and aunts Cletus Jackels, Gladys Steere Junker, and Herbert Steere.
 
Services will be held at Second Baptist Church in Kingwood, Texas on September 25th, 2018.
