Speaking at the World Design Summit

Donation protected

Thanks for visiting! We have less than 24 hours to raise enough funds to present at the upcoming World Design Summit. Moreover, we want to spark a conversation about accessibility and inclusivity at design forums and support others facing barriers to participation.

Our names are Vicki and Kerala and we are part of DesiredLines.

What’s DesiredLines all about?

DesiredLines is a new group of urban planners, designers, and writers exploring the junction of communications, media design, and city-building.

We’re interested in the common threads of people’s diverse contributions to the place they call home. We know that behind every building, park, street, bus route, city service, program, or public event, is a person or group with a vision and a story.

With an up-and-coming website and podcast that connects unlikely city-builders to each other, we’re exploring the way design can influence the way we communicate about our cities.

Why we’re raising funds

We submitted a proposal to lead a workshop at the World Design Summit in Montreal, hoping to engage the greater design community in this conversation. We were thrilled to hear that our proposal had been accepted. Unfortunately, the ticket fee for the summit has proven to be prohibitively expensive. As a volunteer-based team with no additional funding, we simply cannot afford the fees.

Which is why we’ve decided to reach out to our community. Our goal amount reflects our remaining costs to enable two members of our team to attend the World Design Summit.

Design is powerful and every person should have the chance to engage in and benefit from its practice. At the core of DesiredLines is a desire to showcase diverse efforts already contributing to our cities and amplify voices that don’t often get to shape the way we talk about city-building and design. We can’t help but wonder who is being left out of the global design conversation?

When we need funds by

Today! We need to register and pay fees by September 8. We understand that our funding may not be reachable within our time constraints, but still feel the need to be open and honest about this conversation.

Where the money will go

$650 will go towards covering our remaining speaker fees, $200 will go towards accommodations and $50 will go towards materials for the workshop.

If we do not reach our goal, or if we exceed our goal, the funds we do raise will be used to seed a scholarship or grant program that will help others in similar situations participate in design conferences and gatherings.

We hope that any donation to our goal will not only help DesiredLines, but work towards breaking down existing boundaries that no doubt persist.

If you have any advice on setting up such a scholarship or grant program - or any comments or insights you want to share - we'd love to hear from you!

Thank you so much.
