Help us help rescued dogs and cats in El Salvador

Unfortunately, Covid19 has affected everyone everywhere. The last resource to stop animal overpopulation in underserved communities is to start solidarity campaigns at the community level. In our case, the money fundraised here will support spay and neuter community dogs and cats in the San Jacinto neighbourhood in San Salvador, as well pay veterinary bills associated with the treatment of such dogs from the same neighborhood.
El Salvador has been going through difficult times historically, were communities are in the process of copying with the stressors of violence. Loving and caring for their pet families members provides them with a sense of purpose, mental health and healing. All, young and old, are more and more involved in rescue activities, as well in making sure that animals have safer spaces where to live. Animal welfare is becoming an increasing concern for many, and we find that encouraging.
We want to contribute to nourishing a culture of respect and compassion towards everyone, including dogs and cats. So many of the community cats and dogs we support are taken care by neighbours. We must help those dogs and cats to stop reproducing. The longer the wait for a spay and neuter surgery, there are more possibilities are that they will start their heat cycle all over again. We want to end that! our goal is to spay and neuter 50 animals before the year ends.
We try to save resources as much as possible, and in coordination with local shelters and compassionate veterinarians, each surgery could cost up to $60 USD. In addition, we need to find resources to help the animal heal from a disease (ehrlichia, skin diseases, broken bones, special diet, etc) in order to be adoptable.
The Pinky Dog Solidarity Project in El Salvador has been supporting community dogs and cats since 2010. This is a family initiative and operates in both, El Salvador and in Toronto, Canada. Since 2005, from Toronto, us, family members and our friends, engage in educational and rescue activities with diverse communities in El Salvador, we try to support stray dogs and cats belonging to low income families and animal rescue activists, in the southern part of San Salvador City.
We currently have high bills of veterinary costs as well as families who await for our support of pet food; spay and neuter surgeries; many of them are willing to adopt a dog or cat, but have no means to feed them, and will not adopt if an animal is not fixed. The ones suffering the most are female dogs and cats. This fundraiser and the work done through our program, the Pinky Dog Project, is in memory of our beloved dog, Pinky, who passed away in Toronto in 2007, at age 17.
Our dog, Pinky, helped his human family heal from the trauma of war and exile. Thank you so much for understanding our commitment to healthier communities in El Salvador. Fostering a culture of compassion will help everyone survive current unprecedented times.
Again, our main objective through this local intervention is to contribute to community building actions that will foster mental health, mutual support, collaboration, and care for our natural environments.
