NEDERLANDS HIERONDER / DUTCH BELOW Spark of Hope - Building international online language school on ruins of Beirut (Lebanon) Background: On 4th August 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, exploded, causing at least 204 deaths, 7,500 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless. A cargo of 2,750 tonnes of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the previous six years, after having been confiscated by the Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus. The explosion was preceded by a fire in the same warehouse, but as of January 2021, the exact cause of the detonation is still under investigation. The blast was felt in Turkey, Syria, Israël, Palestine and parts of Europe, and was heard in Cyprus, more than 240 km (150 mi) away. It was detected by the United States Geological Survey as a seismic event of magnitude 3.3, and is considered one of the most powerful artificial non-nuclear explosions in history. The Lebanese government declared a two-week state of emergency in response to the disaster. In its aftermath, protests erupted across Lebanon against the government for their failure to prevent the disaster, joining a larger series of protests which have been taking place across the country since 2019. It showed a picture of woman standing on the ruins of what was once her international language school: <a href="http://www.saifiarabic.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Saifi Institute for Arabic Language</a>  (www.saifiarabic.com ). A vibrant place for international students from all over the world, who not only found a place to learn, but als a place to meet, drink, eat,  stay and enjoy in the connected  café-restaurant and hotel and giving work to around 50 people, supporting their families. In a few seconds 12 years of hard work was all gone....! No school building, no house, no car, no work, nothing! Luckily no deaths were recorded for her family and staff, but unfortunately several were injured. This picture and her personal story touched me deeply in my heart and spurred me on to find ways to support. The woman on the picture has a name: <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/rana-dirani-7a57b914/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rana Al-Dirani</a>  (39 years old). I came in contact with her via LinkedIn.  A mother with two young boys and first of all a heart for her business and her staff members. I asked her the simple question: "Can I help?" And yes, we can!  Once you have met Rana, you will experience her enthousiasm, her drive to survive, to recover and above all: taking every spark of hope to rebuild her future and the one of her company and staff. As she said: “I have always experienced sparks of hope in the past month! Sometimes I had lack of, but it always returned.” What a positive mindset! A strong (business) woman and a good example of female leadership in difficult times. The future… The plan: Since the school and the adjacent buildings are collapsed or seriously damaged and currently an investment to rebuild all will be too high and risky, the plan is to first start an online language platform. The main goals of this platform are to continue what was done in the ‘brick-school’: ·         Offering online private and joint classes teaching Arabic ·         Reducing polarisation, by stimulating mutual understanding between students from different backgrounds (religion, ethnicity, nationality, etc) by building a community of international students ·         Increasing social responsibility; supporting employees and their families. Before the blast the institute provided work to around 50 employees, mainly women, with full package support (fixed contract, health insurance, etc). Many of them faced difficulties in finding a job. Currently 10 employees are employed by the company, mainly teachers for language courses which started by using Skype (temporary solution). Rana wants to invest herself too, but currently she does not have full access to her Lebanese bank accounts. Currently she is allowed to withdraw approx. EUR 500,= per month. Money which need to be used to live and to raise two small children. No possibilities for additional investments. An impossible situation!  And here we need your help to make this plan happen! The business plan will be executed and delivered by international Lebanese / Australian consultancy firm.                                  Amount required for this phase 1: EUR 10.000,-   ·         Scope of the assignment and  final delivery: business plan, which entails the following scope of services carried: o   Collection of both primary and secondary data through extensive research, surveys and fieldwork; o   Analysis of the gathered data to determine the attractiveness and profitability of the industry using both static and dynamic frameworks; o   Usage of the aforementioned analysis to plan the positioning and strategic management of the project at hand; o   Collection of technical data through several means, mainly interviews with thematic experts, requests for quotations (RFQs), and negotiations  with technical suppliers; o   Development of a comprehensive technical plan serving as a basis for operational activity; o   Development of a business plan and financial model that complies with the above; o   Formulation of a recommendation regarding the feasibility and profitability of the project at hand, backed by figures resulted in the financial  assessment. Phase 2:  Once it becomes more clear how such a platform should look like, it’s time to build the platform and start promoting it. The business plan, as developed in phase 1, is being used to convince future investors to invest in this platform.   Phase 3: This last phase which would let come Rana’s ultimate dream to life: rebuild the physical school and its adjacent café-restaurant and hotel facilities, in order to share the values where Saifi is standing for not only virtually, but also physically again.   How your donation will be used: The donation will be collected on a Dutch bank account. From here the money will be spent for excecuting phase 1. Een bruisende plek voor internationale studenten van over de hele wereld, die niet alleen een plek vonden om te leren, maar ook een plek om te ontmoeten, te drinken, te eten, te verblijven en te genieten in het aangesloten café-restaurant en hotel en werk te geven aan zo'n 50 mensen, die hiermee weer hun families konden ondersteunen. In een paar seconden was 12 jaar hard werken was in één klap helemaal voorbij ...! Geen schoolgebouw, geen huis, geen auto, geen werk, niets! Gelukkig waren er geen doden te betreuren bij haar familie en personeel, maar helaas wel gewonden. Deze foto en haar persoonlijke verhaal raakten me diep in mijn hart en spoorden me aan om manieren te vinden om te helpen. De vrouw op de foto heeft een naam: <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/rana-dirani-7a57b914/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rana Al-Dirani</a>  (39 jaar oud). Via LinkedIn ben ik met haar in contact gekomen. Een moeder met twee jonge jongens en allereerst hart voor haar bedrijf en haar medewerkers. Ik stelde haar de simpele vraag: "Kan ik helpen?" En ja, dat kunnen we! Als je Rana eenmaal hebt ontmoet, zul je haar enthousiasme ervaren, haar drive om te overleven, te herstellen en vooral: elke sprankje hoop aangrijpen om haar toekomst en die van haar bedrijf en personeel weer op te bouwen. Zoals ze zei: “Ik heb altijd vonken van hoop gehad in de afgelopen maand! Soms had ik er een gebrek aan, maar het kwam altijd terug. " Wat een positieve mindset! Een sterke (zaken) vrouw en een mooi voorbeeld van vrouwelijk leiderschap in moeilijke tijden. De toekomst… Het plan: Omdat de school en de aangrenzende gebouwen zijn ingestort of ernstig beschadigd en momenteel een investering om alles weer op te bouwen te hoog en riskant zal zijn, is het plan om eerst een online schoolplatform te starten. De belangrijkste doelen van dit platform zijn om door te gaan met wat er in de fysieke school is gedaan: · Online privélessen en gezamenlijke lessen aanbieden om Arabisch te leren · Polarisatie verminderen door wederzijds begrip tussen studenten met verschillende achtergronden (religie, etniciteit, nationaliteit, enz.) Gestimuleerd door een gemeenschap van internationale studenten op te bouwen · Vergroten van maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid; ondersteuning van werknemers en hun gezinnen. Voorafgaand aan de explosie bood het instituut werk aan ongeveer 50 werknemers, voornamelijk vrouwen, met volledige pakketondersteuning (vast contract, ziektekostenverzekering, enz.). Velen van hen hadden moeite om een ​​baan te vinden. Momenteel zijn er 10 medewerkers in dienst van het bedrijf, voornamelijk docenten voor taalcursussen die zijn begonnen via Skype (tijdelijke oplossing). Beschrijving van het plan: Fase 1: ·         Een businessplan opleveren, inclusief haalbaarheidsstudie voor de ontwikkeling en lancering van dit online platform. Het businessplan wordt uitgevoerd en opgeleverd door een internationaal Libanees/Australisch adviesbureau.                                                      Benodigd bedrag voor deze fase 1: EUR 10.000, - ·         Omvang van de opdracht en uiteindelijke oplevering: businessplan, dat de volgende omvang van de uitgevoerde diensten omvat: o   Verzameling van zowel primaire als secundaire gegevens door middel van uitgebreid onderzoek, enquêtes en veldwerk; o   Analyse van de verzamelde gegevens om de aantrekkelijkheid en winstgevendheid van de industrie te bepalen met behulp van zowel statische als dynamische kaders; o   Gebruik van de bovengenoemde analyse om de positionering en het strategisch beheer van het betreffende project te plannen; o   Verzameling van technische gegevens op verschillende manieren, voornamelijk interviews met specieke experts, offerteaanvragen (RFQ's) en onderhandelingen met technische leveranciers; o   Ontwikkeling van een uitgebreid technisch plan dat als basis dient voor operationele activiteiten; o   Ontwikkeling van een businessplan en financieel model dat voldoet aan bovenstaande; o   Het formuleren van een aanbeveling over de haalbaarheid en winstgevendheid van het voorliggende project, ondersteund door cijfers, resulteren in de financiële beoordeling. Fase 2: Zodra duidelijker wordt hoe een dergelijk platform eruit moet zien, is het tijd om het platform te bouwen en te gaan promoten. Het businessplan, zoals ontwikkeld in fase 1, wordt gebruikt om toekomstige investeerders te overtuigen om in dit platform te investeren.
