Hello, my name is Sophie, and I am a student at Reed College. I want to study spanish in Asturias, Spain at the University of Oviedo. Having this experience is important to me because I have a family friend named Balbina who lives in Asturias, and I want to get to know her and her home better. In addition, I am interested in anthropology, which is my major, including the wide variety of people and societies; learning spanish and staying in Spain will allow me to connect with a whole world of people with whom I would not connect otherwise.
While I am at Reed, I will also be taking the pre-requisites for an engineering program at Columbia University. It is important that I study a year’s worth of spanish intensively over the summer in order for me to complete the graduation requirements for an anthropology major along with the engineering program pre-requisites.
Some day I hope to be an engineer, and apply the skills I am developing in both art and science. In my career, anthropology will help me build things that are useful and applicable to the lives of many people, whether they are similar to me or not. Studying in Spain will allow me to develop a better understanding of people different from me, and thereby allow me to contribute more in my future career and improve my ability to make connections with others.
Please donate to help pay fund transportation, living expenses such as food and lodging, and a spanish immersion program at the University of Oviedo.
