Hello! My name is Monica Jones, and I’m the founder of Melanated Mamas. I’m the mother to Zanella (7), and Audree (4) and my husband (Brandon) and I are raising our two girls in the Twin Cities.
When I was pregnant with the oldest, I did what a lot of first time moms did. I bought all the books, read all the blogs, and watched all the youtube videos so I could get a grasp on what this new life was going to be like for my husband and me. Sadly as I was flipping through the pages and scrolling online, I didn’t see too many people that looked like me. Not only did I not see many people that look like me, but I didn’t see or hear many stories that I could relate to or would be helpful during my motherhood journey.
So in 2017, I started Bymonicajones and blogged about my motherhood journey, the good, the bad, and ugly. I want to take up space in a predominately white field and share my Black motherhood experience.
Bymonicajones has been the best outlet and personal journal for me, but something was missing.
So I started Melanated Mamas to provide a space where the unseen joy of Black and Brown mothers can amplified and shared with the world.
The motherhood experience of a lot of Black and Brown mothers is filled with a lot of injustices and pain, and those stories need to be told so that we can have the conversations to make a change. However, our joy and love are also essential to see.
Melanated Mamas is a space where the Black and Brown joy in motherhood is amplified and celebrated. This is a community that champions Black and Brown mothers to been seen, heard, and empowered through storytelling, imagery, and connection.
I hope that by helping raise these funds, I can turn this into a space that cultivates an unheard cultural narrative of mothers that need to see themselves and hear stories that resonate with them.
The funds that are raised from this campaign will be for the following
-Website
-Graphic Design, Branding, Logo
- Events for Moms (mainly virtual until COVID restrictions lift)
-Legal support
-Hiring Contractors and Contributors
