Books for the kids of Southside
Donation protected
Southside Elementary's library was completely wiped out during the devastating flood in south Louisiana. For many kids at this Title I school, the library provides their only access to books for recreational reading.
My cousin introduced me to the school's librarian, Marsha Landry. They've been friends for years and she knows firsthand all the hard work Marsha has put into the school's library (on a very tight budget).
Marsha worked to save money to stock the library and was able to purchase hundreds of new books for this school year—all of which were destroyed before the kids could even check them out.
Southside Elementary serves the lowest income area in Livingston Parish. 86% of kids there receive free or reduced-cost lunches. And a majority of these families lost their homes, vehicles, and belongings in the flood.
With so much to be done to rebuild in the area, it's unlikely their library will get the attention it deserves. Marsha has organized programs to get the kids excited about reading, even getting authors to volunteer to speak to the kids. Let's not let her efforts get derailed!
Our donations will go directly toward restocking books and series for the library like "I Survived" and "Cupcake Diaries" (some of their favorites). Whatever you can give would be much appreciated!
Note: I'll send a check for the total amount to Livingston Parish Literacy & Technology Center at 9261 Florida Blvd, Walker, LA 70785. They are accepting and routing donations for the schools of Livingston Parish and we can earmark our money for the library at Southside specifically.
