Southland College Prep Charter High School Ambassador Marching Band and Marching Lady Eagles have been invited to participate in the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington D.C. on April 4, 2020. As a participant in the parade, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on a national stage in our nation’s capital. Students will perform with some of the top tier band programs from high schools, colleges and universities from across the country.
The expected cost for the trip is $120,000. The cost per student is $825, which includes transportation throughout the trip, hotel stay, and meals. This does not include the additional fees in order to participate in the parade. We are raising funds to ensure that not one student eligible to attend this trip is left out due to a financial hardship.
The Southland College Prep band program started in 2010 with seven members when the school was founded. In less than ten years (according the Illinois State Board of Education), Southland College Prep Charter High School has been recognized as one of the highest performing high schools in the state of Illinois. Located in the south suburb of Richton Park, Illinois, Southland is the only public charter secondary school to serve Chicago suburbs.
Southland is focused on preparing all of its graduates to enter and to earn a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university. Southland graduates have been accepted by seven of the eight Ivy League schools, 38 of the top 50 U.S. News & World Report schools, several Historically Black Colleges and Universities and every major four-year public Illinois University.
Opened in August of 2010, the school’s achievements include the following:
· In 2018, Southland was the only charter high school in the state to earn the designation of “exemplary” from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). Exemplary designation is awarded to the top 10 percent of the state’s high schools and indicates Southland does not have any underperforming student groups.
· For the last five years Southland’s graduation rate has been 100 percent—an accomplishment achieved by only 13 other Illinois high schools.
· Southland’s first five graduation classes (2014-2018) have earned $105 million in merit-based scholarships.
As the school has grown, its band program has grown. In 2015, the marching band was formed with 25 members and has grown to more than100 band members and 25 Marching Lady Eagles Dancers.
In 2017, Southland was one of 18 marching bands to perform before thousands of spectators in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on State Street in downtown Chicago and again in 2018, the band participated in the Thanksgiving Day parade in downtown Chicago.
In August 2018, Southland opened a new state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center to accommodate the school’s growing band and orchestra, theater, chorus and dance programs. The Performing Arts Center consists of a new state-of-the-art band room accommodating more than 200 musicians and remodeled chorus and dance studio spaces.
Southland is achieving its goals of ensuring that 100 percent of Southland’s graduates will be admitted to colleges and universities of their choice and that they will have the financial resources to make college attendance a reality.
