Saving South Australia's Koalas

Donation protected

The recent bushfires across the whole of Australia have had a huge impact on the Australian koala population as a whole. The Kangaroo Island population of Chlamydia free koalas has potentially been decimated. Koala rescue groups not only assist with koalas injured by bushfires when required they also assist koala’s injured through vehicle accident, dog attack etc. require support.

The bushfire crisis has meant there is an urgent need for us to bring forward our long term plan of creating a purpose built Koala Rehabilitation Centre to accommodate volunteers from all over the country and the world.

Please read on for more information about who we are, what we do, and how you can help.

Koalas in South Australia were already facing an uphill battle for survival. With koala habitat becoming increasingly fragmented from continued residential development and food sources harder to find, our state’s koalas have to travel further for food. The recent bush fires have decimated that habitat even further. Unfortunately, a fragmented habitat means that they often fall victim to incidents with cars and trucks. Dog attacks are also a major issue for urban and rural koalas. Not only do they suffer from the effects of habitat loss, they also have to contend with the increase of disease and illness, particularly Chlamydia and Renal Disease, that plague the population.

We have had an influx of koalas in care in summer 2019/2020 due to the recent heat waves. This has meant our vet bills and other expenses are much higher than expected for this early in summer. The bush fires have resulted in a significant loss to our local as well as interstate koala populations which means it is more important than ever for us to do everything possible to save all koalas that come into our care all year round. To do this we need increased funding for veterinary diagnostics etc and to start planning for the future.

Southern Koala Rescue has been working with Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary's registered charity foundation for fundraising purposes since our establishment in August 2018. In late 2019 we started the process to become a registered charity in our own right to help us further our own long term goals. An new organisation specific bank account is also currently being set up. Funds from this campaign will be transferred initially into the directors account and then directly into the new charity account to ensure complete transparency.
