South King County Horse Park

South King County Horse Park

Vision of the park

A group of horse and nature conservation enthusiasts have formed a nonprofit organization (Friends of Rock Creek Horse Park) in order to conserve the open space in the Puget Sound area and foster enjoyment of horses.  We are presently partnering with a government entity that has indicated an interest in  allocating some land and contributing some other resources to develop and build an equestrian complex in south King County.  Our vision is that the park will be open to the public for the education, recreation, and the enjoyment of riders of all ages, disciplines and abilities; to the equestrian community for hosting educational and competitive events and the broader community for hiking and other uses consistent with the park mission and available facilities.

The park amenities will be modeled on other horse parks in the Puget sound area including Bridle Trails State Park and Paradise Ridge Equestrian Park on Vashon Island.

While completion will likely be done in phases, our preliminary vision for the finished complex includes:

Trail access

200’ X 250’ arena

70’ x 200” arena

80’ round pen

Cart and conditioning trail

Parking for horse trailers and cars

Ancillary facilities for equipment storage, spectator seating, etc.

What is needed now

Much of the funding for the horse park will be accessed through grants which are only awarded to non-profit entities with a 501(c)(3) status.  This is a designation by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows non-profit organizations to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions.  We are seeking funds to pay for the application to obtain the 501(c)(3) designation.  This includes filing fees that will be paid to the IRS and legal assistance and review.

Looking to the future

We know this undertaking is a huge endeavor but the end result will benefit generations of residents in our local communities.  Much funding will be required for the development, construction and maintenance of the complex.  Any funds contributed that are not used for the 501(c)(3) application will be used for these purposes as we work toward the goal of building a facility for the enjoyment of all in our community.
