Join with us to raise funds for undocumented community members in South Jersey negatively impacted by COVID-19.
After speaking with CATA leaders and members, CATA made the decision to raise a minimum of $50,000 to distribute to undocumented individuals and families throughout Southern New Jersey who are struggling due to the COVID-19 crisis. There are many who have lost their jobs, experienced reduced working hours, are dealing with health issues from the virus, and potentially face unexpected funeral costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the undocumented immigrant community is excluded from unemployment insurance and has been left out of other federally funded programs.
We have already been receiving reports from farmworkers in nurseries and other businesses about reduced hours, factories and food processing plants closing because of the spread of COVID-19, and others who continue to work in essential industries, but feel that their health and safety is being jeopardized by a lack of health and safety protections in the workplace.
The current crisis with COVID-19 has revealed what many immigrant workers have always known and lived through their experience. While our society now classifies their work in agriculture, food processing, and services as essential to keeping our grocery shelves stocked with food and our economy running, they have always been treated as expendable. Undocumented workers face a difficult decision. Many continue to work every day while putting their own health and the health of their loved ones at risk. If they need to stay home to care for themselves, their families or children or they are laid off, they do not have access to unemployment or government benefits to sustain themselves.
We are creating this fund as a concrete way to support our community members in need.
We believe that this responsibility is a function of our government. It is the responsibility of our state and federal governments to ensure basic needs like housing, food, medical care, etc. for all of us, independent of immigration status. We are constantly working to change the system, but we know that in this immediate moment, the survival of our community is paramount.
100% of the funds raised through this campaign will go directly to the undocumented community in South Jersey and will be distributed in consultation with CATA leaders and members. Thank you for supporting this effort.
