S.O.S: Scott, Michelle, Zoey

A family member & friend needs our help.

 In 2016, Scott Schachte blacked out and fell at work (at St Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth MN).  For over 2 years, Scott (age 58) has been dealing with physical & mental issues and declining health.  Scott’s doctors have discovered some scary medical conditions:  1) Stroke, 2) Alzheimer’s, 3) Parkinson’s-like symptoms, and 4) CBD (Corticobasal Degeneration), a rare, progressive neurological disorder.  Scott still enjoys some independence and living in the one-level easily-navigated rambler-style home (where he grew up).   Higher grab-bars and handrails help tall Scott maintain balance to get up and down stairs.  His cherished Green Bay Packers “shrine” and large Packers souvenir collection are in the basement!

 Michelle (Holmvig) Schachte is Scott’s spouse & caregiver.  In Oct. 2017, Scott found Michelle unconscious on the floor in their Superior WI home.  He was able to phone his sister and get an ambulance dispatched.  Michelle had a tumor-induced seizure, and underwent emergency brain surgery to remove a large benign tumor.  Michelle has recovered, her large surgery scar has healed, and she has regained driving rights to transport herself and Scott to many medical & therapy appointments.  Today, Michelle works as a home-based Call Center healthcare agency rep, answering calls from elderly Medicare clients.  With a headset and home computer, she is just a few steps away when Scott needs help.  It can be overwhelming.

 Through the struggles, their gentle dog Zoey has been a source of help and comfort.  Zoey is Scott’s constant companion, alerting when help is needed, providing balance for wobbly steps, and giving emotional support.  Much like a trained service animal.

Then (3 months ago), Michelle & Zoey were attacked by a large, unleased dog in their neighborhood.  They both suffered bites, scrapes & bruises.  Lacking current vaccinations, police quarantined the attack dog to ensure no rabies.

 Now, Zoey has difficulty walking.  She needs expensive surgery to repair leg ligaments & tendons.  With mounting medical bills, there are no spare funds for large vet bills.  Good grief!  What’s next?

“Angel dog” Zoey is a key part of Scott & Michelle’s well-being.  Scott goes for walks when Zoey goes for walks.  Michelle smiles when Zoey smiles.  Zoey keeps watch over Scott, so Michelle can work in her bedroom “office.”

You can help too:

* Donate here (any amount helps) with credit or debit card!  It’s safe and easy.  Or, mail donations directly to Scott & Michelle.

* Pray!

Although their lives are changed forever, we can give hope, a little financial relief, and some options.

Thank you for sharing your blessings to help!
