Sophia's Scoliosis Treatment Fund

Donation protected
This is Sophia.

She’s graduating high school this year from Surrey, British Columbia.

Next year, she’ll be studying Political Science at the University of British Columbia. Her genuinity, courage, and care for others is known to many at City on a Hill Church, where she serves as a leader of the Youth group.

On the outside, she seems like a normal, thriving young woman. But what you may not know is that she is experiencing a severe deformity of the spine called scoliosis inside her body.

HERE’S HER STORY:

In the year 2012, she was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, a sideways deformity of the spine. Scoliosis has affected her health in numerous ways that impact her day-to-day life. Chronic pain in the back areas, headaches and problem breathing due to limited lung capacity from the curvature of her spine, are just some of the health issues that result of the scoliosis.

Although doctors have recommended surgery to her, they cannot guarantee a full recovery due to her body’s current state. Specialists have informed her that her body would have a difficult time withstanding the side-effects of the surgery, possibly leading to even greater chronic pain and immobility as a result of the operation. In order to help her body achieve the best state of balance and strength before surgery, there is a specific non-surgical treatment that seems to be the best option for her.

WHAT SHE CAN DO NOW:

Amongst the few non-surgical, strengthening treatments specifically catered to severe scoliosis patients in Vancouver, there is a centre that offers a treatment called Scolio-Pilates.

The procedure employs foam wedging in key areas of the body, cuing breath where needed, then exercise progress in different spinal positions used in activities of daily life. This is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that helps to alleviate chronic pain and produce a neutral spine. In Vancouver, this treatment is available at a clinic called Sitka Physio. The treatment is offered for $90/hour, preferably once a week, to help scoliosis patients in the same situation as Sophia. It isn’t covered by our regular Medical Services Plan.

WHAT SHE NEEDS:

Coming from a low-income family of seven, this amount of money is extremely difficult to accumulate.

The calculations for one year of treatment totals to approximately $5,000 ($90per session x 52 weeks).

We, her youth group, sincerely want to invite people to help Sophia raise all the funds required for her scoliosis treatment. We hope that you can make a financial donation of any amount you feel led to give!

We also really believe in the power of prayer to render a successful treatment and healing process.

Ultimately, we hope to see Sophia flourish without being weighed down by this illness. We know that Sophia is destined to know many great things in the world!

*Please note that all fund raised through this platform will be given to Anna Yeo, Sophia's mom, as the fund can only be given to someone who is 18 years old or older.

This piece Sophia sketched is a portrayal of her physicality; it vulnerably displays her brokenness through the image of her invisible illness.
