12pm - Another update. He's going to have to be admitted to the hospital, as they are still not able to stop the bleeding. May have to get a specialist in from San Antonio to see if there's something more going on.
8/15/20 - It's been a long time since I've sent everyone an update and a lot has happened in the last few months. Dad has been getting progressively weaker for months, going from a cane to a walker and now a wheel chair. About a month ago on a routine ct scan they found a Pulmonary Embolism (blood clot) in his lungs and he started taking Eliquis for that. At the same time, test results showed the Chemo was no longer working (tumors growing and cancer markers rising). So, they stopped the intravenous Chemo and started him on Gleevec a little over a week ago. Gleevec is an oral Chemotherapy medication. Since that time he has gotten significantly weaker, not sure if it's from the new medication. Last Saturday he got down in the hallway and Mom couldn't get him up, so she had to call the EMS. So, now Sissy and I are probably going to take turns staying here to help Mom get him up and down. Then this morning his nose started bleeding and we couldn't get it to stop (because of the anticoagulant - Eliquis, he's taking for the blood clot). Had to call the EMS again. They couldn't get it to stop either. Had to take him to the hospital. Of course we can't be there.
Not good for a cancer patient during this pandemic. We need all your prayers please.
2/18/20 - UPDATE. We are reactivating my Dad's gofundme. His last test results weren't good. His tumor markers are going up rapidly and his tumors in the lungs have almost tripled in size since December. He started his second round of Chemo last week. Going forward, he is going to be having treatments every other week indefinitely. As of now, they are waiting to find out if he can get more financial assistance. Either way, they won't be able to afford the treatments for long without additional help. Any dollar amount you could contribute would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for reading and your continued prayers. PLEASE SHARE!
9/9/19 - Our Dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer about 2 1/2 years ago. If you know anything about Pancreatic Cancer, you probably know the survival rate is very low. It's been an emotional roller coaster for our family. We did catch it early enough that he was able to have surgery (the Whipple), where they remove the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), the gallbladder, part of the stomach and the bile duct. The surgery went well, but there was still just a small chance that all the cancer was removed. Here we are 2 years later and the cancer is back. No surgery will fix it, but the Doctors say that Chemo could give him an additional 10 to 15 months, over the 6 to 12 months, which is his current prognosis without treatment. The problem is the Chemo will cost (out of pocket) about 5500 for 3 months and that doesn't include the nausea drugs that he would need as well, which aren't covered by insurance. He was able to qualify for financial assistance, but that still leaves about 1000 for the Chemo treatments and about 1350 for the nausea meds. Neither of which our parents can afford as they live solely on social security. This amount (2500) will cover treatment for the first 3 months, but we have no idea what further treatments may be necessary after that. This also doesn't cover any other misc. medical fees or the countless trips to San Antonio that they have already made, as this has already been a financial burden on our family. Our Dad has decided that he wants to start the Chemo, but he can't start the treatments as of yet, due to the cost. If you could contribute anything at all or share this with your friends, so we can try to at least get the treatments started, our family would be forever grateful. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this and for all of your thoughts and prayers.
