Sonia’s Medical Costs

Sonia is a beautiful 40 year-old, mother of 3, who lost both of her kidneys to renal failure at the age of 33. She received a kidney transplant 7 years ago and due to reasons still unknown, her body began rejecting her precious donated kidney in November of last year. Since then, her medical condition has been rapidly deteriorating as doctors tried to save her precious donated kidney by all means possible. This means that Sonia has been through many medical treatments, including chemotherapy to force her immune system to stop rejecting her donated kidney. Last week she learned that her kidney is no longer working and she needs another transplant. To make matters worse, the treatments used to stop the rejection have unraveled a variety of conditions such as acute anemia, cyst formation and chronic pains that are elongating her wait in the transplant list. All of this has taken a huge toll on her family, both emotionally and financially. Sonia’s husband, who is self-employed and travels internationally for work has had to put work aside to take care of his wife and the family savings are all gone. With limited income, two kids in college and another in middle school, this family is struggling to make ends meet.
