When I first moved to Nashville, young, single and unexperienced, I began to pray for a mentor. I asked the Lord to send someone that had walked the same road as me, and had wisdom that I didn’t. A mentor that had a husband and babies and had successfully navigated the music industry. I continued to pray that prayer for 15 years. Finally, year 15, I asked the Lord why He hadn’t yet answered me. Surely it was a noble request. He responded to me by telling me, “Be what you need.”
Girls Write Out discipleship group was born. It’s a place of encouragement, prayer, and community for fellow female songwriters. For the past 6 years, it’s continued to grow. Cooing babies and nursing mamas are welcome. We are now meeting monthly at Gateway Church in Franklin, TN. We’ve learned a lot about songwriting, but also about industry, and most importantly about hearts. God has met us there on so many occasions, in some incredible ways. We have prayed together, served together, grown together. Oh, how we need family in this competitive town! A place to cheer each other on in pure love and nothing else. And we have just seen the beginning of the songs coming from this community.
Last year, my sister Maribeth moved to town. All these years I’ve been writing, she’s been leading worship. We were having a conversation one night about the need for mentoring for up and coming female worship leaders and songwriters. We were laughing about what we wished we would’ve known. There are so many girls figuring things out on their own, a lot of times because it would be awkward for their male worship pastor to mentor them. We get it. We just want them to have family too. So we wondered, what would happen if we teamed up to reach both----female worship leaders and writers??? Brave Worship was born!!!
Last year, Brave launched with a conference. We had 50 attendees, and saw God move in ways we had never experienced. We created an online community where we could stay connected. We launched our Brave Worship podcast to reach women another way. This year we feel a different call.
We have the opportunity to partner with an amazing pastor, Ray Hughes . Ray teaches about the sound of heaven, from a biblical and scientific perspective. He has an incredible ability of reaching back into the past, and showing how it ties into our destiny and songs. You can watch him preach on Bethel TV. Ray will be leading the Brave Worship girls through a 5 day historic and revival tour. And when we are full and about to burst with amazement, we will land at a castle, Carberry Tower , and write songs for 3 days.
In the music business, the female writer is a rare breed. So many give up their dreams, especially when they have little ones. But, how amazing to have the opportunity to show our little ones how to chase dreams.
It’s not easy to leave family behind, and say a crazy YES to what God is calling us to! But, we believe that there will be a breakthrough that affects our generations and more to come. We believe this is just the beginning of songs that have a sweet, nurturing side of the Lord shining through them. Songs that the world needs to hear.
